The city of Hell, Michigan is up for sale, and potential buyers will be happy to know that they won’t even have to put up $666K for it.
Did you know that you can literally go to Hell? Not the torturous spiritual realm of the damned, mind you; it’s an actual town located West of Detroit, Michigan, and it’s currently up for sale.
The unincorporated community (an area that doesn’t have its own municipal government) is a popular tourist trap, with oodles of humorous shops and activities themed around its unusual name.
Boasting a ‘Creamatory’ ice cream shop, Damnation University, and even a scattering yard to spread loved ones’ ashes, Hell, Michigan is really leaning into its namesake… and now, it’s going up for sale.

The town is up for grabs for the low, low price of $625K. The sale includes 3.5 developed acres of land, where the aforementioned businesses — including the ‘Souvenirs from Hell’ gift shop and ‘Hell’s Chapel of Love’ — are established.
The town is being sold by its owner, John Colone, a Vietnam Veteran responsible for transforming the community into the beloved tourist trap it is today.
He started work on the project in 1998. After 28 years of ownership, he’s ready to retire and hand over Hell to the next generation.
“You know, I’m 80 years old, and I just wanted some John Time,” he told local news outlets.

Hell, Michigan has been around far longer than Colone’s ownership of the acreage. It was first settled in 1838 by George Reeves, who built up a general store and grist mill on the banks of what is now known as ‘Hell Creek.’

George had a habit of paying local farmers for their grain with his own homemade whiskey, leading wives to comment, “He’s gone to Hell again.”
The town was officially established on October 31, 1841, and has been put up for sale twice since Colone came into ownership 28 years ago. In 2015, he listed it for $999,666. Now, he’s slashed the price by a third, and is still waiting on a buyer to take it off his hands.
