Helldivers 2 players stumbled across something unreasonably perfect recently: the CQC-9 Defoliation Tool exists, Guard Dog drones exist, and nothing technically stops anyone from combining the two into a chainsaw-slinging, autonomous melee monster.

Redditor Kevin53845 posted a mockup imagining exactly that: the beloved backpack drone, wielding the chainsword instead of bullets. The concept surged past 2,200 upvotes in under six hours, and the replies have flooded in:

Ok, but what if

The idea feels ridiculous in the best way. Guard Dogs already chase targets aggressively, so giving them a weapon that requires getting dangerously close to enemies just makes the chaos more efficient.

It’s absurd, but mechanically sound, which is exactly why the community has latched onto it.

Why a Chainsaw Guard Dog Could Actually Work in Helldivers 2

The Defoliation Tool’s unique ramp-up mechanic is what sells the concept. It starts with medium armor penetration, but the longer it grinds into a target, the more destructive it becomes, eventually punching through even heavy armor. That progressive damage could theoretically let the drone chew through a Charger’s rear armor solo.

No other Guard Dog comes close to that kind of lethality. The ballistic version bounces off heavy armor. The Rover melts through ammo. Even the Hot Dog flamethrower drone, despite its flair, requires sustained exposure to do real work. A chainsaw dog would be the first true autonomous finisher.

The community, of course, is no stranger to over-the-top Guard Dog suggestions. Fans have previously floated equipping Guard Dogs with Quasar Cannons, the GP-20 Ultimatum, and even slapping Guard Dogs on Guard Dogs. But this latest one strikes a rare balance between absurdity and practicality.

There is, however, one major concern: friendly fire. Guard Dogs already show zero hesitation when it comes to mowing down anything between them and their target—including fellow Helldivers.

Giving one a chainsaw adds a whole new layer of squad hazard. It might start revving while it’s still strapped to your back, or slice through any squadmate standing between it and whatever Bile Titan it’s decided to chase.

The Community Thinks Arrowhead Would Probably Ruin It Anyway

The player base knows Arrowhead watches suggestions closely. The flamethrower-equipped Hot Dog drone came directly from community requests, after all. But many remain skeptical about execution, especially when past balance patches have dulled the fun out of otherwise great ideas:

That cynicism runs deep for a reason. Arrowhead has a history of nerfing weapons into the ground, tweaking cooldowns until stratagems become unusable, or overbalancing gear as soon as players start to enjoy using them.

The dream of a chainsaw drone still lives. It has the community’s full support. But after seeing railguns, breakers, and flamers stripped of their edge, trusting the devs to deliver something powerful without burying it in restrictions is a hard ask.

Would you trust a chainsaw-wielding drone hovering near your face, or stick with a weapon that can’t decapitate you by accident? Let us know in the comments below.
