The Voltron saga is getting a live-action reboot headed by Henry Cavill, and fans have just received a pretty interesting report about the same: That Hasbro is planning to launch a full toyline and create a wide range of merchandise based on this upcoming film.
Apparently, as reported by Hashbro, the company has launched a licensing deal with Amazon MGM Studios for the same. This merch would likely include action figures, roleplay items, and collectibles inspired by the live-action reboot movie’s take on the iconic 1980s anime property.
While this update has come in a while since the initial announcement of the project, it appears to have fixed one of the fans’ biggest concerns. Initially, fans feared that the film would potentially skip theatres and head straight to streaming. But this latest update may signal that the film might now get a theatrical release.
Why Hasbro Pulled Off This Latest Move for Voltron

As reported by Cosmic Book News, according to Hasbro, this collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios for Voltron merchandise allows them to extend their legacy of reviving classic brands into new generations. As Tim Kilpin, President of Toy, Licensing, and Entertainment at Hasbro, reportedly said in a statement,
Voltron’s long and rich history strategically aligns with our portfolio of iconic 80s brands. Our collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios will further strengthen the franchise’s longevity and unlock new opportunities to engage both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
For those unversed, this famous animated franchise centers on a team of five space explorer teenagers from Earth who pilot five robot lions that combine to battle evil forces, and form a giant, super robot, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, to protect the world from the evil clutches of King Zarkon and Prince Lotor.
All We Know About Henry Cavillʼs Voltron So Far

While this particular Voltron live-action movie hasn’t been met with many updates either, some facts about it have been released. Here’s all we know about the same.
This upcoming film is being helmed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the filmmaker credited with helming both action and comedy films, like Central Intelligence and Red Notice. It will be based on the original 1980s anime series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
The star cast of the same is headlined by Cavill, alongside Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista, Rita Ora, John Kim, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, Samson Kayo, Daniel Quinn Toye, and Tharanya Tharan. Each of their respective roles has yet to be revealed.
As of this writing, unfortunately, this live-action project doesn’t have a trailer just yet, nor has the film’s official release date been confirmed, though the project has wrapped filming (as confirmed by Bob Koplar, via Instagram).
It has also yet to be revealed whether this live-action piece will get a theatrical or streaming release, even though the latest reports about Hasbro’s collab with Amazon MGM Studios point to the former. Either way, until more updates about the same hit the news, fans can purchase the original ’80s anime and Voltron: Legendary Defender on Prime Video for streaming.
