A pack of heroic dogs chased away a masked man after he allegedly attacked two women and tried to drag one of them into a tunnel.

The incident happened on July 14 as a 67-year-old woman and her 39-year-old friend walked eight dogs along Gardiners Creek in Kooyong, southeast Melbourne.

Victoria Police said an unknown man jumped out of a bush and wrapped his arms around one of the women. She managed to push him away before he allegedly tried to pull the second woman toward him.

“He lunged for my friend and grabbed a hold of her neck and upper shoulders,” one of the women told 9News. “Then he started walking over to me and talking and threatening me to get me into the tunnel.”

After both women fought the man off, their dogs charged after him as he fled toward a tunnel beneath the Monash Freeway.

Footage recorded during the incident shows the man running from the pack as the dogs barked, jumped at him and pursued him into the tunnel.

One dog managed to latch onto the man’s pants and tear away a piece of fabric during the chase. Police confirmed the dogs tore off part of his clothing as he escaped.

“I was thinking of all the different scenarios that could happen, but I was more trying to jump into action rather than focus on how scared I was,” the woman said.

Despite the alleged attack, she insisted that she would not be driven away from the area.

“You always have to be alert. I’m not going to let it stop me from coming to the park that I enjoy so much, and the dogs enjoy.”

Victoria Police have launched a criminal investigation and released a facial composite of a man detectives want to speak to. The suspect was described as wearing black tracksuit pants, white socks, slides, a black and grey hooded top and a black face covering. He was also carrying a large bright blue backpack.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help identify the man to contact Crime Stoppers.

This isn’t the first time this year that dogs have saved the day. Back in June, a farm dog sacrificed herself to save a family of five from a huge fire that destroyed their whole house.
