A homeowner in California is facing fines of up to $100,000 after their illegal fireworks display, well, exploded online.

There are certain holidays around the year when people go all-out with their fireworks displays. You have Bonfire Night in the United Kingdom, the Fourth of July in the United States, and, of course, New Year’s too as the big ones. Or if you want to disrupt an opposing football team.

Despite wanting to put on a show for your neighbors, there are still some rules you have to abide by. You can’t just set off fireworks at will, and you can’t use ones that are deemed to be illegal either.

These illegal fireworks often produce a bigger explosion, which makes them highly sought-after. However, one homeowner in California is now facing a massive fine after their display.

Sacramento’s “illegal” fireworks show goes viral

As per the California Post, Sacramento fire officials said that they counted at least one batch of illegal fireworks in the display, which came out the back of a U-Haul trailer.

“We had drones in the sky and crews traveling around town,” Captain Justin Sylvia told the Post. “We watched them for quite a significant time. We sat there, watched and counted.”

According to the report, Sacramento will fine people over and over again for using illegal fireworks. These fines start at $1,000 and become $5,000 for each time after the third fine. You can add on an additional $10,000 fine for being near a park or critical infrastructure.

The display did catch attention on TikTok and Instagram, with one post comparing it to “Disneyland,” because of how many fireworks were actually going off.

Another said they’d never seen that specific color from a firework explosion before either, and was pretty wowed by things.

Others said that the $100,000 fine is “insane” as there is “no victim or damages” from the display.

“Fireworks kill thousands of pets and wildlife every year, and that’s just what’s documented. The real number is much higher. Not to mention the waste and air pollution they leave behind,” another argued.

It remains to be seen if the homeowner will be fined the full $100,000, or if they’ll come to some sort of settlement.
