Peter Claffey’s iconic line in Episode 4: Seven in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms left a lasting and tremendous impression not only upon viewers but also on showrunner Ira Parker.

Ser Duncan the Tall gave a persuasive speech about honor and bravery, only for the audience to remain silent. With no one stepping forward to join his cause, he asked: “Are there no true knights among you?” Apparently, this was Parker’s most memorable day on set, as revealed in a Reddit AMA post.

In HBO’s A Knight in the Making Episodes 4-6, Claffey opened up about his preparation for the role. The clip revealed that the actor used the memorable speech for his audition tape. The Irish star reflected:

It was kind of an emotional thing to actually be doing it in real life after months and months ago trying to get it right to get the role.

Director Sarah Adina Smith praised Claffey’s performance, admitting how everyone was so transfixed watching the actor become Ser Duncan the Tall. “We were watching the birth of a true knight,” she said in the same clip.

Dunk’s speech not only reflected his humble beginnings and the lessons he learned from Ser Arlan of Pennytree, but it also revealed how much he values and respects the oaths of a knight.

Claffey’s forceful delivery added more weight to its meaning, so it’s not surprising at all that Parker and the entire crew had a memorable day while shooting that scene.

Smith spoke more about Dunk in an interview on the Official Game of Thrones Podcast, particularly his underdog arc and how important it is to hear that moving speech.

Claffey delivered his lines while on horseback, which made it even more uncomfortable, but it didn’t stop him from pouring all of his emotions into words. The director gushed over how awesome it was to witness “the birth of a movie star.”

Many dialogues in that episode gave viewers that exhilarating feeling they felt while watching Game of Thrones during its peak, but this time, in Dunk’s case, it is the moment where a hedge knight stands up for what is right. “He becomes the hero we all crave,” adds Smith.

It’s evident that Dunk’s speech will go down in history as one of the most memorable lines ever in any Game of Thrones franchise.
