Are you tired of being a normal human who survived the nuclear apocalypse in Fallout 76? Good news! Thanks to the Ghoul Within update, you can turn yourself into a Ghoul.
Now, when you are farming for Black Titanium, completing side quests, or lounging about the wasteland of Appalachia, you can do so without the fear of radiation poisoning. Exactly how does one suddenly decide to leave everything about humanity behind and turn themselves into a Ghoul?
Well, let’s break that down. Here is everything you need to know about becoming a Ghoul in Fallout 76. Don’t worry, it’s reversible.
How to Become a Ghoul in Fallout 76

If you want to become a Ghoul in Fallout 76, you need to complete a mission called ‘Leap of Faith’ that becomes available after you reach level 50.
This mission has multiple steps and culminates in you gaining the ability to transform into a Ghoul.
Completing the Leap of Faith Mission

The first step of the mission is to listen to the «Distress Signal» radio station via the radio built into your Pip-Boy. Once you have done this, you will be tasked with speaking to the wounded scavenger.
You will find the wounded scavenger named Leamon Price inside the Whitespring Refuge. After speaking with Leamon, you will be tasked with finding the ‘Radiation Expert‘ who resides in the northeast corner of the map.
This expert resides inside the Hillside Cavern to the northeast of Vault 79. This area has some high-level enemies, so you will want to make sure you have a strong build.

When you have found the cavern, head inside, and you will meet up with Leamon, as well as two new NPCs: Asher and Parthenia. Parthenia will request that you collect Emmett Mountain Side Tunnel to find some irradiated ore.
This location is to the east of Whitespring Resort. Once there, you will be required to defend Asher from Feral Ghouls. Afterward, you will want a confrontation between Asher and a scavenger, which may result in the scavenger’s demise.
Return to Parthenia. You will now need to speak with Leamon about becoming a Ghoul. You will have two options, each with a different outcome.
|
Choice |
Outcome |
|---|---|
|
Leamon Becomes a Ghoul |
Leamon goes through the process of becoming a Ghoul. Afterward, he will join the Revenants and become an NPC you can interact with. |
|
Leamon Stays a Human |
If you choose for Leamon to remain human, he will return to Emmett Mountain and live out his final days. |
After the choice has been made, the mission will end, and you will receive a new mission called «Fresh Pair of Genes.» This mission allows you to choose whether you become a Ghoul or remain human.

If you decide to become a Ghoul, talk to Parthenia, and she will tell you to use the inhaler on the table. Once you do, you will enter a radiation chamber and be transformed into a Ghoul.
As a bonus, you will get to choose a new look for your character, allowing you to change your hairstyle, makeup, and select from various Ghoul-specific design choices.
Benefits of Being a Ghoul in Fallout 76

There are various reasons to become a Ghoul, but one of the biggest is that you will no longer take radiation damage. Instead, you will be healed by radiation and be able to take advantage of a new mechanic called Glow.
Glow acts as a second health bar that fills green over the top of your normal health bar. When you absorb a lot of radiation, you will see this new health bar appear, granting you additional damage absorption.
On top of this, Glow can be used to activate various perk cards that are specific to Ghouls. These can be used to regenerate AP and move faster.
If you are a fan of melee builds, you can take advantage of the Feral Meter. This special meter increases your melee damage if it is fully depleted, as you have officially gone feral.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, if the bar is full, you can enjoy a nice boost to your strength and endurance. As a Ghoul, you will retain the mutations you had while you were human.
How to Restore Your Humanity

If you decide that being a Ghoul just isn’t for you, you can choose to restore your humanity. To do this, go to the character selection menu from the main menu.
Once there, select the Ghoul character that you wish to make human. You will see a button prompt at the bottom of the screen that will allow you to restore your humanity.
The first time you choose to do this will be free. However, the second time will cost Atoms. Keep this in mind and choose wisely whether you prefer being a human or a Ghoul.
