How to charm wall yokai using gestures in Nioh 3.
You might’ve already encountered a couple of friendly yokai in Nioh 3, though one such example you may not meet until a few hours into your adventure is the volatile wall yokai, Nurikabe.
This Nurikabe often grants you passage to new areas or points of interest, but only if you play its game successfully. Fail, and you’ll be in for a fight. To prevent that from happening, here’s how to charm Nurikabe in Nioh 3.

How to charm Nurikabe in Nioh 3
Nurikabe is a friendly yokai that takes the form of a wall in Nioh 3. You’ll know when you’ve found one, as they’ll typically appear as walls with eyes that can moan and groan, or if you’re on the ‘wrong’ side of them, they’ll have a talisman attached to them that allows you to disperse them without any mind games or violence necessary.
Once you reach Exploration Level 4 for an area, any Nurikabe you have yet to encounter – or have already defeated – will be marked on your map so you can easily see where they are.
Once you do encounter a Nurikabe, you’ll find that they often obscure the path leading to a point of interest or some kind of collectible. To pass the Nurikabe, you’ll need to perform a suitable gesture to charm them, but how do you know which gesture is the right one?
To determine the correct gesture to perform, you want to look at the nearby bloody graves of Revenants and see how they died. If they died to the Nurikabe (and not another hostile yokai), their cause of death will be something along the lines of ‘Crushed to death by Nurikabe for their friendly gesture’. You basically want to perform a gesture that is not what caused this poor Revenant to be killed.

For example, the first Nurikabe you’re likely to encounter is found in Ryotan Temple in the Iinoya area of Warring States. The nearby bloody grave states that the character died due to their friendly behaviour (highlighted in blue), so I performed one of the red-coloured gestures – the Backflip – from the gesture menu (which you can access by pressing R1 and the Options button on PlayStation). The Nurikabe then allowed me to pass, revealing the Ryotan Temple’s Hot Springs.
The short of it is that if you find a Nurikabe, you’ll need to perform a gesture, but not just any gesture; it must be a gesture that is not what the nearby Revenants have died as a result of. Remember to always check nearby bloody graves before performing any old gesture to the Nurikabe, or you may meet an unfortunate end!
