The Welcome to Tau Ceti contracts in Marathon will test you right off the bat. Here’s how to complete them. When you start the Welcome to Tau Ceti contract chain in Marathon, read the title like it’s being spoken as a warning. Completing it is simple by later contract standards, but you’ll nonetheless be tested by the game’s PvE and PvP, neither of which is forgiving. The first contract you’ll do in Marathon is the first part of a two-contract chain. It doesn’t ask too much of you relative to what you’ll be doing later, but for the unprepared, it will be a grueling start. There are two steps to Welcome to Tau Ceti 1, the first in the chain: Note that you need to do the first step before the second, but thankfully, Perimeter isn’t home to too many high-difficulty UESC robots, but they are around. Look for the thin ones that hover around the various points of interest. These are Recruits, and they’ll go down to a few shots from any weapon at most ranges. Be careful, though, as the sound of your weapon is bound to call down the wrath of other UESC drones and will be a clarion call to other Runners in the vicinity. If you’re solo, play as Assassin so you can easily cloak and de-aggro the UESC enemies. Playing with a group will mean coordinating who shoots what and when. The FLT array you need to scan is atop the large buildings that support the radio towers. One of the easier to find is at the South Relay in the southeastern portion of the map. Head to the largest building in the northern portion of the South Relay area and start making your way to the upper floors. You should see a yellow hexagon symbol appear, denoting where you need to go. Make your way onto the roof of the northwesternmost black and green building using a ladder at the building’s southern end. You’ll find the FTL array a little ways from where you arrive on the roof. Interact with it to expose the main array, then complete the scan and the first contract. The second part of Welcome to Tau Ceti blessedly only has one step: Here’s the catch: these comms antennas are in-world items, and there are only so many of them to go around. If another player destroys the one you’re trying to reach before you get to it, you’ll need to find another one. Another boon is how far away the quest icon will appear: out to almost 100 meters. The marker will also automatically adjust to the next nearest antenna if one is destroyed while you’re within range. Ask me how I know. You’ll know the comms antenna by its bright orange color (and the quest marker, of course). As they’re on top of a building, you’ll need to find your way to the roof. Sabotaging them is a simple matter of interacting with the antenna, letting your runner pull out their PDA-like device, and waiting a few seconds. The antenna will explode, and you’ll complete the contract. Be aware that said explosion is quite loud and will draw in at least enemy Runners, if not the UESC. Head back to ONI in the lobby and turn in this second contract, and you’ll be off to the races. No pun intended. For much more on Marathon, check out our dedicated game page.
