How to equip a free kit

Don’t want to lose your loot? Free loadouts in Marathon are the perfect way to collect gear without risking your own.

Free kits are a staple in the extraction shooter genre and Marathon has its own you can equip. Being free, they do not give you much gear to survive, but it’s a great option if you need to do some loot runs to fill up your vault.

Free kits are called Sponsored Kits in Marathon. These are purchased from the Armory on the right-side of the screen under the Today’s Sponsors section. To reach this, go to your Loadout or the Vault and select Armory at the top. Choose the Sponsored Kit that has the “Free!” tag to automatically equip it – this will move any equipped gear into your vault.

A free Sponsored Kit will come with a weapon, ammo, patch and shield kit, and equipment. All of it will be basic gear, so do not expect to walk in with anything particularly amazing. The other way to get a free kit is to play as Rook. This solo mode-only Shell spawns in with a random weapon, two recovery items, a shield, but also an Enhanced Backpack, ensuring you can carry a lot more stuff than you can with a Sponsored Kit. This is an excellent option if you want to do a loot run and exfil.

Running a free kit is a good idea in Marathon if you’re just logging in and need to warm up, don’t want to risk your valuable loot, or want to go in guns blazing and see what you can scavenge. Check out our Marathon page for ongoing coverage of Bungie’s next title.
