The Bone Axe is one of your first big upgrades in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The bone axe hits harder, looks scarier, and proves you’re at least somewhat capable of surviving past day one. The game doesn’t exactly spell it out for you, though so here’s how to actually get it.

Step 1: Collect Bones (The Obvious Way and the Lazy Way)
You’ll need bones. Around 25 of them if you want to build a full second-tier toolset. There are two ways to get them:
-
Hunt animals and loot bones the old-fashioned way.
-
Or if you’re lucky and have unlocked the Bark to Bones spell, cast it on trees to turn wood into bones. Yeah, trees into bones. Magic is weird.
Either method works. Just make sure you’re stocked up before moving on.
Step 2: Collect Hides and Make Leather
Next, you’ll need leather, which comes from rawhide scraps dropped by animals. Any type of hide will do. Once you’ve collected a bunch:
-
Build a Tannery
-
Use the Tannery to turn rawhide into leather
You’ll want at least 20 leather to be safe, especially if you’re building armor alongside the axe.
Step 3: Craft the Bone Axe
With bones and leather in hand, head to your Crafting Table or Standard Workstation.
-
Select the Bone Axe recipe
-
Make sure you have enough bones (and possibly some leather, depending on recipe unlocks)
Congrats! You now have a Bone Axe—a second-tier tool that chops better and looks like something ripped straight from a caveman fashion show.
Bonus: What Comes With It
Once you unlock Bone crafting, you can also make:
-
Bone Pickaxe
-
Reinforced Armor, which is tougher against melee enemies (unlike the cloth armor that helps against magic attacks)
So it’s worth farming the materials in bulk if you’re planning to gear up fully.
Final Blurb
The Bone Axe is your first real flex in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. It proves you can kill things, tan leather, and stack bones without asking too many questions. Just don’t ask where the Bark to Bones spell gets its power. Some things are better left to magic.
