The author of the series, Sanshiro Kasama, and the illustrator Hikaru Uesugi first released Deadpool: Samurai with a one-shot back in 2019. This was released as a collaboration between Marvel and Shueisha, bringing the notorious hero and his hilarious yet amazing deeds to Japan. As the one-shot was received with great admiration by the readers, it was turned into a manga series, starting from December 2020, and ended in June 2021.

Viz Media released both volumes of the manga in 2022. The complete manga series has a total of 26 chapters in total, with Season 2 covering Chapters 16 to 26, with a hiatus between the publishing. The second “season” of Deadpool: Samurai was initially announced as a romantic comedy manga titled Secret Steward. However, when the manga’s first chapter debuted on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service in August 2024, it featured a surprise twist that changed the course of the entire manga and revealed its true nature as the second season of Deadpool: Samurai.

In the classic Deadpool style, the finale was an epic plethora of references and action. The chapter begins with Deadpool facing off against various alternate versions of himself, like the Sakura, Spider, and Thanos Pool. The battle is rather wayward, not coming to a definite climax or conclusion.

Additionally, the chapter folds its real-world publication woes and hiatus into the fiction with characters joking about how the series went from being one of the most-read Marvel spinoffs to being hit by a long year-plus break. Gags were also made about slowed responses from editors and authors being frustrated with contracts and money.

The referencing doesn’t stop here as the front cover of the final chapter pays an ode to Naruto – featuring a Deadpool face on the famous Hokage mountain. Instead of a traditional resolution to the plot or to character arcs, the chapter ends with Deadpool doing something wildly out of proportion; he blows up the Shueisha building, symbolizing the end of the manga series.
