Unlocking new Runner Shell skins is one of the main ways to customize your character in Marathon. Here’s how you earn them. Unlocking new skins for your Runner Shells is one of many ways you can express yourself in Marathon. The process for doing so is very simple in theory, though in practice, it might be quite a bit harder than earning cosmetics in other games. Note: This information is based on content experienced during the Server Slam pre-launch. It will be updated when Marathon fully releases. As of the Server Slam, the only way to unlock additional Runner Shell skins is by extracting when using a particular faction’s Sponsored Kit. It can be either the free or paid version, but it must list the specific faction as the Sponsor. After a successful exfil, you need to go into the Factions section of the Codex, select Sponsored Kits in a particular Faction screen, then click on the class that used the Kit. There are six Shell skins per faction, one for each of the playable Runner Shells. Their color schemes match up with those of the faction. CyberAcme is black and green, NuCaloric is pink and white, and so on. If you want the easiest way to unlock new Shell skins, I’d recommend paying the 2,000 Credits for the green rarity Sponsored Kits out of the Armory rather than taking the free option. The free kits offer the bare minimum in terms of firepower and survivability, just this side of a Rook loadout. You can play as a loot goblin and avoid fights whenever possible if you take a free Sponsored Kit. By that same token, because they’re free and infinitely reusable, you can try to go in solo, take out a geared player, and get out. I’ve done exactly that a few times, and it’s always worth the risk. I’d also expect that when Marathon releases and Season 1 gets underway, there will be more cosmetics coming in the battle pass. You’ll need Silk to purchase these skins, both for your Runner Shells and your weapons, and Bungie does like to lock the best stuff behind a paywall. Hopefully, Silk gains are strong enough that you won’t need to be timegated by currency caps, but we’ll need to wait and see when the game officially comes out.
