While no signs of foul play have been reported, an official cause of death is yet to be revealed.

In the last interview before his death, Carter opened up about losing his wife, Sandra, to cancer and how her diagnosis turned his life upside down. Speaking on Live From The Green Room, back in February 2025, Carter stated,

I just lost my wife to cancer. [I] was with her for 15 years…My wife was battling cancer for eight years.

During the long and tiring battle, Carter had to balance his professional and personal life, which was not easy for the actor. He recalled how difficult it was to stay focused, stating,

For eight years, I had to balance creativity with being supportive, and then in the middle of that, being able to remember my lines, stay focused as if nothing’s happening over here…Then taking what’s happening over here and putting it into my performance while at the same time trying to remain normal in front of people. It don’t really work.

Carter’s career spanned five years, and in that time, he appeared in multiple films and television series. His last role was in The Company You Keep (2023), where he played Pike for a total of three episodes.

How T.K. Carter Finally Got Cast in The Corner

Among his many projects, The Corner will always stand out. T.K. Carter played the role of Gary McCullough in the HBO drama television miniseries revolving around the story of a family living in poverty in the middle of the open-air drug markets of West Baltimore.

Released in 2000, The Corner was based on David Simon and Ed Burns’ The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood.

With a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Corner had critics showering it with praise. It earned three Emmys at the 52nd Primetime Emmy Awards:

  1. Outstanding Miniseries
  2. Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Special
  3. Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie

It was also nominated for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Special. Needless to say, The Corner will go down as one of Carter’s best works. But did you know that he almost did not get cast as Gary?

Recalling the story of how he got The Corner, Carter revealed that he had gone to Tasha Smith’s house, looking for food and a friend to hang out with. By his luck, a casting director for the miniseries was there and Smith “hooked” him up with her manager.

The manager got him the audition, but he ended up having to read for George “Blue” Epps, instead of the character he saw himself in. He stated,

I don’t want to play Blue. I’m like, all or nothing. Either I’m going to play this guy or don’t call me…I read the role, Blue, it’s good, but I want to read Gary. I tell em, ‘I am Gary. I’m that guy.’ I had my drug problems…I had my party problem, but I didn’t have no heroin problem. They still wouldn’t give me.

After some back and forth and the interference of Chris Albre, the former President of HBO, Carter was finally Chris McCullough, and the role of Blue went to Glenn Plummer. And that’s how Carter starred in The Corner. As you can see from his story, perseverance was always a huge part of his long life.
