India is weighing a controversial new approach to border enforcement that could see crocodiles and venomous snakes used as a “biological barrier” along parts of its border with Bangladesh.
The proposal is being discussed internally by the Border Security Force as officials look for alternatives in areas where traditional fencing is not possible due to terrain and flooding.
According to reports, large stretches of the border remain difficult to secure, with shifting waterways and marshland preventing construction in key areas.
India explores reptile deployment for border control
India has invested heavily in fencing along its border with Bangladesh, but around 20% remains unfenced. Of the roughly 530 miles still open, about 110 miles are considered unsuitable for barriers due to flood-prone and river-lined terrain.
Internal discussions have reportedly included the idea of deploying crocodiles and venomous snakes in these regions. A March 26 communication from the Border Security Force headquarters asked field units to assess whether such plans would be feasible from an operational standpoint.
The idea has been under consideration for weeks. Reports indicate discussions date back to early February 2026, when Border Security Force director-general Praveen Kumar chaired a meeting on the issue.

Officials have described the concept as a potential “biological barrier,” though it remains in early stages of evaluation.
Concerns have already been raised internally about the practicality of controlling animals in open environments, as well as the risks posed to nearby communities.
Wildlife experts have also warned that concentrating predators in these areas could disrupt ecosystems and introduce new safety hazards.
The proposal comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government continue to expand border enforcement efforts, including the use of drones and infrared surveillance systems.
