The Accountant 2 banks on drama and hard-hitting action to deliver a fitting sequel to the original film nearly a decade later. One returning star claims that she’s not only «thrilled» to be involved in the follow-up, but teases that it outdoes the first movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, star Cynthia Addai-Robinson addressed what led to her return in The Accountant 2, which debuts nine years after its predecessor following development hiccups and the shifting of the franchise’s rights from Warner Bros. to Amazon MGM in 2024. Addai-Robinson stated she always held out hope for a sequel to The Accountant, feeling her role in the original was important for her career.
“I always find it interesting when people ask, ‘Were you drawn [to the role] or how did you choose?’ And it definitely doesn’t always work that way. More often than not, it’s the role is coming to you, and normally it’s just right at that time when you’re in a mild panic about, ‘Will I ever work again?’” she said. “So for this, I had always hoped there would be a sequel. There was always talk of it. I was never really in the conversation about what that would look like, so when I did get the call, and they sent me the script, I would have just been happy to be part of it in any capacity.”
I would have just been happy to be part of it in any capacity.
Not only is Addai-Robinson back in a major role for The Accountant 2, but she believes the sequel is «pushing the action» more than the first film as its humor and emotional depth will stand out.
“I thought maybe I’ll just pop up here and there, and so as I read the script and realized, ‘Oh, actually I am in it in a major way,’ of course, I was excited,» she said. I was excited to get to work alongside some of the actors I didn’t get to work with in the first one and work with new actors to get to be part of our sequel. I was beyond thrilled, and I think when the audience sees the sequel, certainly if you loved the first one, I think there’s so many elements of that in the second, but it’s elevated. It’s even more … we’re pushing the action, pushing the humor, pushing the heart. I’m just proud to be part of it all over again.”
The Accountant 2 Brings Back Several Stars From the Original
Known for major small-screen roles in Arrow, Spartacus and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Addai-Robinson portays U.S. Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina in The Accountant franchise. Addai-Robinson’s character calls in a favor to the titular accountant, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), following the murder of Treasury Department director Ray King (J.K. Simmons). Wolff then convinces his estranged brother and weapons expert, Braxton (Jon Bernthal), to help him solve the murder. However, their investigation leaves them prone to potential attacks from eagle-eyed killers.
The Accountant 2 also stars Jurassic World franchise actor Daniella Pineda, who Addai-Robinson worked with on The Vampire Diaries. The film adds to Addai-Robinson’s big-screen CV, which includes Colombiana and Star Trek Into Darkness.
Premiering at South by Southwest (SXSW) this past March, The Accountant 2 garnered good early reviews, earning a critical rating that blows away the first installment. The original film attracted solid box-office numbers ($155 million worldwide against a $44 million budget) and cult classic status despite mixed reviews.
Advanced screenings of The Accountant 2 begin in select theaters on Apr. 15 before the film’s wider release on Apr. 25.
