While attending the premiere for The Bride!, Christian Bale, who stars opposite Jessie Buckley in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s gothic reimagining of the classic tale, recalled being taken aback by the script. Given that risk-driven ventures that don’t conform to proven formulas have been few and far between in the mainstream studio landscape, Bale admitted that when he first read The Bride!‘s script, he thought he had been sent the wrong screenplay.

As a result, he was pleasantly surprised to learn that WB was ready to bet $80 million on the movie (via Deadline), similar to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (as per THR).

I thought I had the wrong script, because I thought what I’d read, I said you know, ‘This must be a low-budget indie, because it’s way too risky for anyone to put some serious money into. But I want to do this movie! I want to do this low-budget indie that Maggie’s written.’ But they said to me, ‘No, no, no, no, no. They’re taking a big swing.’

With the movie inching towards its theatrical opening, Bale, who was instantly on board for Gyllenhaal’s vision, touched on why such works are more important than ever in the current climate.

Christian Bale on Why The Bride! is Very Important For the Industry

Elaborating on the current state of mainstream movies, Bale lauded the duo of Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca for greenlighting such projects, stressing that original, fiery productions are more important than ever for the theatrical experience. He said:

The people are Warner Bros., Pam [Abdy], Mike [De Luca], kudos to them, they are recognizing movies [are] in death throes right now, and if we don’t start coming up with desperately original, fiery films that you must go see in the movie theater, then we’ve got no right to keep making movies. So I wanted in from that.

The Dark Knight star’s sentiment echoes Martin Scorsese‘s remarks from the auteur’s 2019 New York Times piece, where Scorsese pushed back against the idea that the modern blockbuster climate was merely a matter of supply and demand. Scorsese argued that if people are continuously given the same kind of thing, they will inevitably crave more of it, and in turn, reduce the appetite for original and fresh stories.

It’s a chicken-and-egg issue. If people are given only one kind of thing and endlessly sold only one kind of thing, of course they’re going to want more of that one kind of thing.

On the bright side, the duo of Abdy and De Luca haven’t disappointed on that front, and the new Maggie Gyllenhaal movie could prove to be another homerun in their immaculate streak.

Can The Bride! Extend WB’s Original Streak Success

After a rocky start to 2025 with Mickey 17, WB has been on a killer streak with its movies, particularly on the front of original movies from auteurs. From the success of Sinners and Weapons to distributing F1, one of the biggest hits of 2025’s summer, the studio registered a high point after past tumultuous years.

Even Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, while not a major box-office breakout, became his highest-grossing movie and is currently the favorite to land the Oscar for Best Picture.

With WB continuing this momentum for another risky venture from Emerald Fennell, whose Wuthering Heights has proven to be another box-office win under De Luca and Abdy’s belt (via Deadline), there’s no betting against The Bride!.

As of writing (March 3), the movie is projected to mark $15-22 million (via Box Office Theory). If the word of mouth is good, despite competition from other mainstream outings like Pixar’s Hoppers and Scream 7, there’s hope it can rake in promising returns from its big-screen run.
