The Harry Potter HBO remake has faced concerns due to the controversy around J.K. Rowling. Some Harry Potter cast members have spoken up online, either in support or in disagreement with the author’s divisive social media posts and harmful rhetoric about transgender people.
Tom Felton, soon to reprise his role as Draco Malfoy on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is a Harry Potter cast member who has supported Rowling. His on-screen father Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy, appears to be standing behind him.
Per The Independent, Variety asked Felton if Rowling’s anti-trans beliefs impacted his decision to return as Draco, and he answered that he “can’t say it does» because he was not «attuned» to the conversation. Then he went on, “The only thing I always remind myself is that I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world — here I am in New York — and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. And she’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.”
Felton’s decision to perform in Cursed Child was deemed as controversial, as was his alleged support of Rowling. Isaacs stepped in on X, formerly known as Twitter, and let everyone know he was coming to see Cursed Child.
«Saw you presenting on the Tonys tonight son — you looked good, sounded good and did great,» Isaacs said in response to a clip posted from the Tony Awards. «Tickets booked for November x»
HBO's Harry Potter Is Building Its Cast
Harry Potter has nearly got all the main characters now when it comes to filling out its cast. The roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout. As aforementioned, Nick Frost will be playing Hagrid, and John Lithgow will be playing headteacher Albus Dumbledore. The role of Draco Malfoy has gone to young actor Lox Pratt, and the role of Lucius to Emma actor Johnny Flynn.
Isaacs is happy to see Flynn take up his old role. «A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn’t have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don’t make him sing…» he wrote on X. He added as a hashtag «#KillTheElfEarly» a reference to the elf Dobby, who is one of Harry Potter’s allies. But, it’ll be a while before the story gets round to showing Dobby’s fate.
HBO’s Harry Potter has no release date yet.
