The clone conspiracy theory has been put to bed. Jim Carrey has been forced to confirm that the Jim Carrey we saw at the César Awards was, in fact, Jim Carrey and not an imposter – yes, really.
For the uninitiated, the Grinch star attended the 51st César Awards in Paris last week, where he received an Honorary César and delivered a speech in French. Footage shows him on the red carpet and signing autographs, in a rare public appearance for the typically private actor.
But fans fixated on one thing: his appearance. Viral footage sparked speculation about perceived changes to Carrey’s face, voice and even eye colour, with conspiracy theorists claiming he’d been replaced by an imposter – despite a lack of evidence.
This took another turn on Monday (March 2), when makeup artist, drag queen, and prosthetics expert Alexis Stone claimed to have impersonated Carrey at the awards ceremony. Stone has yet to comment on the situation since then, but Carrey has spoken out.
Jim Carrey confirms Jim Carrey attended César Awards
After the César Awards confirmed that the real Jim Carrey attended the event, the actor himself has set the record straight. A spokesperson for Carrey told The Cut, “Jim Carrey attended the Cesar Awards, where he accepted his Honorary Cesar Award.”
It doesn’t get much more straightforward than that. His comment arrives after Gregory Caulier – the general delegate of the César Awards – shut down the rumors in a statement shared with Variety.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions,” he said.
“He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words. He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members.
“His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
Caulier continued, “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”
Debunking Alexis Stone image
And if that weren’t evidence enough, Stone’s post has come into question. Alongside Getty Image photos of Carrey, there’s an image of a prosthetic face, fake teeth, and makeup on a desk in view of the Eiffel Tower.

When you run the image through an AI detector, it results in a 97% likelihood that it’s digitally edited. Chances are that Stone’s Carrey post is nothing more than a gag, but the prosthetics expert is yet to comment on the situation.
Although the clone conspiracy theorists are still going strong, for the most part, fans didn’t even believe anything was afoot in the first place.
Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “I’m more willing to believe a face lift than this freaking clone conspiracy. My god people. And why was he acting a little weird? He’s Jim Carrey. Could be a meta bit… I’m going to run through about a thousand more theories before I get to clone.”
Another said, “Literally any celebrity having any signs of aging is decided to be a clone these days. But if it makes you feel better, psycho theories about famous people goes back as far as we’ve had celebrities.”

“I think Jim’s just a lot more quiet and meek when he’s not in performance mode, similar to Robin Williams,” added a third.
“That night he was receiving an award that he was accepting in French and paying a heartfelt tribute to his dad in the process, so I can believe him being a little more vulnerable and toned down on a night like that.”
