ELI5 Read Next Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains some spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
Jujutsu Kaisen makes it very clear that Yuji Itadori’s fate had been sealed long before he ever swallowed Sukuna’s finger. What seemed like bad luck actually comes from Kenjaku’s centuries-long obsession with human evolution and cursed energy.
In the middle of that obsession are the Death Paintings, and once you get what they are in Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji’s link to Kenjaku, and why Choso calls him “brother” – everything starts making serious sense. Let us explore in detail.
Jujutsu Kaisen Death Paintings: Origin and True Purpose
The Death Paintings in Jujutsu Kaisen are some of the earliest and most disturbing experiments of Kenjaku’s. More than 150 years ago, while possessing the body of Noritoshi Kamo, Kenjaku found a very special woman who could conceive children with cursed spirits. Instead of protecting her, he used her.

Nine pregnancies ended in forced abortions, and each fetus merged with a cursed spirit to form sentient, cursed wombs. They were sealed as special-grade cursed objects and later called the Death Paintings. They are neither pure curses nor pure humans, only unstable hybrids that exist between both worlds.
Choso, Eso, and Kechizu are the best-known ones. Unlike mindless curses, they think, feel, and form family bonds. That emotional depth is exactly why the Death Paintings mattered to Kenjaku – they proved that cursed energy could exist within human life. To Kenjaku, this was the first real move toward “evolving” humanity beyond its limits.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji Itadori’s Connection to Kenjaku Explained
Yuji is not a Death Painting, but he is way closer to them than he ever realized. Kenjaku, while possessing Kaori Itadori, gave birth to Yuji, technically making Kenjaku Yuji’s biological parent. So he is not just some random kid – he was carefully built.

Moreover, unlike the Death Paintings, Yuji was not created by fusing a fetus with a curse. His body was designed to handle cursed energy at crazy high levels on its own. That is why he can survive Sukuna’s fingers and stay a steady host without instantly losing control.
It is also for this reason that Choso views Yuji as his brother – both of them originate genetically and spiritually from Kenjaku. Yuji belongs to the same twisted family tree – even though he was created in a different way.
However, most importantly, Yuji reflects lessons Kenjaku learned from earlier experiments. Where the Death Paintings were sealed failures, Yuji’s a living one, raised in the real world, meant to host Sukuna and trigger large-scale chaos. His existence is central to Kenjaku’s ultimate plan to force human evolution through cursed energy.
