King of the Hill‘s revival has seen a Bill Dauterive has been at his lowest point in the animated series to date, and the voice star behind him is teasing a brighter future for him moving forward into the next season and beyond. One of the best aspects of King of the Hill’s return to Hulu has been seeing all of the characters age and grow in the time since the end of the original series. But it was a bit rough for Bill’s part of it all as he became even more of a sad sack than before.

This continues through King of the Hill Season 15 now streaming with Hulu. But there have been slight changes that seem to tease that Bill’s future is going to be different now that his friends are helping him after hitting rock bottom. Speaking to about the new season, Bill voice star Stephen Root teased that in the now recording Season 16 of the series, Bill’s romantic life is starting to change as he heads into a brighter future, “We’re moving in the direction of Bill being mature enough to have a real girlfriend, not a comic one.”

King of the Hill’s Bill Might Get a Girlfriend

“I think we’re heading in that direction because everybody is is growing up a little bit,” Bill voice actor Stephen Root revealed when asked if Bill has a potential for actual romance in his future. “I think by the time this season ends, and the new season which we’ve started recording, we’re moving in the direction of Bill being mature enough to have a real girlfriend, not a comic one. I’m very much in favor of that.” Bill goes through some very tough things this season as while the show’s not getting darker, Bill’s getting more desperate for human connection.

“I think with the way the show’s going, I think it’d be harder to get into a hugely dark place with Bill,” Root said of Bill’s current direction at the end of King of the Hill Season 15. “I think as an audience member, I liked to see where he was headed as he goes down into the depths. It might be rock bottom for this season…but I think Bill’s gonna get a little better.” Looking back on Bill in the original series compared to now, Root also appreciates that Bill’s friends are seeing him differently too.

How Bill Evolves in King of the Hill’s Future

“He had a lot of problems, and it was it was great to be able to come out of those problems and have the rest of his friends not only tolerate him, which I think they did in the first iteration of the show,” Root explained. “He was a buddy, but it’s like anybody else. Sometimes you just tolerate a friend.” As Root reveals, that’s changed a great deal for Bill in the revival, “I think that’s changed dramatically in this new version of it, where they’re trying to make him a better person. That he can now actually go out in society and and be useful.”

King of the Hill did have Bill head into his roughest patch yet with his addition to cuddle therapy in “No-Cuddle Offense,” but Hank and the others promise to directly help him get his life together. With King of the Hill Season 16 confirmed to be fully written, and Root teasing that recording for the season has already begun, it does raise some hopes that fans will get to see a much better situation for Bill moving forward.
