A shipment of KitKat bars worth thousands of dollars has sparked one of the year’s strangest viral moments after a massive chocolate heist led to trucks being escorted like high-profile targets.

Back in March, thieves made off with more than 12 tons of KitKat bars, stealing a truck carrying 413,793 units. The scale of the theft quickly caught attention online, turning what could have been a routine cargo crime into a widely shared story.

In response, Nestlé rolled out a tracking system using the unique batch codes printed on each bar. If one of the stolen products is scanned, the system flags it and provides instructions on how to report it, helping the company trace where the chocolate ends up.

But it’s the company’s next move that really took off online.

KitKat trucks go viral for insane levels of security

KitKat trucks in Canada were spotted traveling with full security convoys, including black SUVs, after a job listing surfaced seeking “professional security guards” experienced in protecting high-value goods.

The sight quickly went viral. In one widely shared Instagram clip, creator Shawn Molko filmed a convoy surrounding a KitKat truck in downtown Toronto.

“KitKat is taking no chances here. This is presidential-level protection,” he joked. “Either they don’t want any more break-ins or they got Beyoncé in that truck.”

On TikTok, another clip showing a similar escort racked up hundreds of thousands of views, with users split on whether the move was serious or staged.

“Okay, now I’m convinced it’s just a media stunt,” one viewer wrote. “I hope the marketing team got a massive raise,” another added.

They weren’t far off.

KitKat later confirmed the convoy was part of a marketing campaign created by agency Courage, designed to lean into the viral heist and turn it into a humorous moment.

“Rather than relying on heavy messaging, we tapped into a distinctly Canadian sensibility,” said Courage founder Joel Holtby. “No explanation needed: just a KitKat delivery truck, fully escorted as if it were high-value cargo.”

While the internet leans into the joke, the missing chocolate is still unaccounted for, with Nestlé continuing efforts to track down the stolen shipment.
