Legendary '80s Shonen Jump Anime Returns With First Official Remake Trailer

The new upcoming Fist of the North Star anime series, set for release in 2026, has finally received a major update.

In September 2024, fans got a small taste of the remake with the anime’s new key visual, but this still came with little information. Two years after the project’s initial announcement, that has now changed — finally, there is a new trailer to get excited about, along with some information regarding the adaptation, albeit with much of the remake’s information remaining under wraps. The official debut trailer for the upcoming series can be seen below.

Fist of the North Star Continues 40th Anniversary Celebrations in Major Anime Series Update

The new trailer was shared online following the Warner Bros. panel on Saturday, which featured other information for anime such as Record of Ragnarok III. The first Fist of the North Star trailer appears to be delivering exactly what fans wanted from the remake, remaining true to the original and highly acclaimed manga series that featured its own distinct art style, complete with over-the-top violence and a gritty sci-fi setting. At this point, the character designs and fashion from the original ’80s manga series are iconic, and seeing the older designs in motion with contemporary animation techniques is sure to be a treat for fans. While this does mean that CG is being utilized, the trailer appears to remain relatively true to the original work.

In addition to the trailer, Warner Bros. Japan announced some of the main cast that will be part of this new adaptation. Joining as the voice of Kenshiro is Shunsuke Takeuchi, while Daiki Yamashita will join the cast as Bat and M.A.O. will voice Rin.

While the 40th anniversary of the series passed in 2023 when the new anime project was announced, seeing Fist of the North Star fully remade with updated animation could be quite the celebration of the series’ long history. Buronson, the writer of the series, recently revealed being excited by the new remake, and the chance it offers old and new fans alike to see the series remade with newer technology that wasn’t available previously. «A work from 40 years ago will be reborn as animated work,» he said. «I took a step back from animation at the time since it is a little different from manga. Now, animation and movie technology has evolved tremendously…moreover, the principle of new animation production is to depict the original work with care. I am so looking forward to it.»

The original series, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump between 1983 and 1988, starred the now instantly recognizable Kenshiro fighting his way across a nuclear wasteland to prove his worthiness as the successor to the Hokuto Shinken, an ancient martial arts style that he was chosen as the successor of. Fist of the North Star became one of the most successful manga series of all time, with well over 100 million copies sold, as well as multiple spin-offs, anime adaptations, video games, novels, a live-action film and a stage musical. The most well-known of the adaptations is the 1980s version of the anime, which is also responsible for one of the most well-known scenes and lines from the series: the infamous «Omae wa mou Shindeiru,» followed by the perhaps even more quoted «Nani?»

The ’80s version of the Fist of the North Star anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, while the manga is fully available in English via VIZ Media.
