Let Morticia And Gomez Be The Only Romance In Wednesday Season 2

Morticia and Gomez Addams are the ultimate couple on Wednesday. They have it all — riches, legacy, two beautiful children, and supernatural powers. With all this comes the pressure to live up to and maintain their reputation, and they excel at it. Their love story owes everything to Nevermore, where they met and their enduring romance began.

Wednesday Season 2 will bring the Addams siblings, Wednesday and Pugsley, as well as Morticia and Gomez, back to Nevermore. While Mr. and Mrs. Addams will continue to grow stronger in love, providing many more swoon-worthy moments, romance isn’t the show’s primary focus. As such, it would be best to let only them remain the reigning couple on Wednesday.

Morticia And Gomez' Beginnings

Let Morticia And Gomez Be The Only Romance In Wednesday Season 2

Morticia and Gomez are first seen sitting opposite their daughter in the back of the Addams family hearse, with their butler, Lurch driving them to the town of Jericho, where Nevermore Academy is located. Pugsley sits up front, while Wednesday is at the back, visibly uncomfortable as her parents sing along to Roy Orbison’s «In Dreams.» While everyone in the car rolls their eyes at Morticia and Gomez’ exaggerated display, Wednesday seethes in anger, as her parents are shipping her to Nevermore — the very place where they found each other.

Gomez calls Nevermore a cool place, telling Wednesday it’s where he met his future wife. As the family car enters Nevermore, the couple looks at the school surroundings, nostalgia in their eyes. The place evokes memories of the past. Morticia and Gomez remain deeply in love and inseparable as ever. Tish, as Gomez lovingly calls his wife, was a star student at Nevermore — captain of the fencing team, Queen of the Dark Prom, and President of the Seance Society.

Episode 5, «You Reap What You Woe,» shines a light on Tish and Gomez’s time at Nevermore, though from various other perspectives besides romance. Wednesday learns her father was accused of murder during his time as a student at Nevermore, and a flashback reveals that the incident took place 32 years ago, during the 1990 Rave’N — a night themed Goth and Glamour. As she holds her father’s arrest report, the flashback unfolds: Larissa Weems screams over the dead body of Garrett Gates while Gomez stands on the balcony above with a sword in his hand. In her report to the Sheriff, Weems blamed Morticia Frump for the murder, stating the two men were fighting over her. Handcuffed and accused of murder, a young Gomez finds it hard to say goodbye to a young Tish.

During the Parents Weekend, as Morticia and Gomez return to Nevermore, they agree that their years at school were the very best of their lives. The truth begins to unfold shortly after: Gates was infatuated with Morticia, and this turned into a dangerous obsession. Since the outcast-hating Gates family was shielded by the police, Morticia was powerless against her stalker. On the fateful Rave’N night, Gates broke into Nevermore under the instruction of his father, Ansel, with a vial of Nightshade poison, intending to spike the punch bowl and murder the outcasts. But his mission was derailed when he saw Morticia and Gomez, and he went after them instead. A fight erupted between the two men, and Garrett slammed into a column, breaking the vial in his pocket and poisoning himself. Blinded by rage, Garrett charged at Morticia in the final stages of the conflict, and she stabbed him in an act of self-defense. Gomez took the blame in order to save his love, but he was cleared soon after. This incident brought the pair even closer, certain that they were meant to spend the rest of their lives together.

This Is The House That Morticia And Gomez Built

32 years later, Wednesday digs up Gates’ grave, and concludes that he was killed by nightshade poisoning, not a stab wound. She brings Mayor Walker Gates’ severed finger with a blue sheen — a sign of the poisoning. It turns out that the Mayor had covered it up.

While all charges were dropped against Gomez, it didn’t change anything between him and his wife. Morticia and Gomez continued to love each other all of these years, their bond untouched by time. They went on to marry, build a beautiful life together, and raise two powerful children who, in the upcoming season, will carry their legacy forward.

Wednesday Season 2 Needn't Focus On Romance

Let Morticia And Gomez Be The Only Romance In Wednesday Season 2

Wednesday Season 2 has room for other couples, but whether it should explore them depends on how much space the main plot can afford to give. Morticia and Gomez, however, are the ideal couple. Their love is unmarked by how the newer generations approach dating and relationships. Theirs is a unique bond in the show — timeless, theatrical, and the backbone of the Addams Family legacy.

While Ajax and Enid come close-ish, it’s a major relief that Wednesday Season 2 won’t weigh the protagonist down with a love triangle or a love story. Wednesday will focus on other things, but Morticia and Gomez should rule as the show’s definitive romance.
