Lies of P: Overture

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and people getting upset about difficulty in Soulslikes. The latest discourse surrounds the recently released expansion for Lies of P — Overture.
The release of Overture coincided with the addition of difficulty settings in Lies of P. The game now has three difficulty settings: Butterfly’s Guidance, Awakened Puppet and Legendary Stalker. The first two are easier modes, and the final one is the standard experience.
Difficulty Adjustments Inbound
However, a recent video by game director Ji-won Choi said there’s a possibility that the difficulty of Overture may be adjusted based on player feedback.
«Among all the feedback, we are paying the closest attention to the combat experience,» Choi says. «We identified areas that did not turn out quite as we intended. Therefore, we are reviewing various adjustments, including difficulty reduction. However, combat is one of the most fundamental experiences in Lies of P, so any modifications or changes require meticulous work and thorough testing. We are still reviewing the specific details and schedule for a patch, but we want to let you know as soon as possible why it’s taking our team some time, and the general direction we’re heading.»
A Reddit thread by AashyLarry about Choi’s «Director’s Letter» contains a lot of praise for Choi and Neowiz for their transparency about the game. However, quite a few comments also expressed frustration about Neowiz considering difficulty adjustments given Lies of P now has multiple difficulty modes.
«The game is hard, no question, but not too hard yet,» writes TonberryFeye; «I might be in the minority, but I hope they don’t make the game too much easier. There are already three difficulty sliders,» comments Jaraghan; «What’s the point of a difficulty choice? They don’t need to listen every time. The difficulty level is fine,» asserts MidnightSunset22.
There are also a fair few comments that disagree with the above sentiment, saying the difficulty is over-tuned and Neowiz is right to make adjustments.
«I would usually disagree with lowering difficulty, but NG+ scaling on ‘hard’ difficulty is f**king ridiculous. You get two-shot by literally everything, dogs do the same damage as bosses. It definitely needs more tuning. I just hope it will be proper tuning and not blanket changes,» writes BeanButCoffee.
There’s a common falsehood in this feedback that suggests that, because there are difficulty options, balance isn’t necessary on the hardest mode. This simply isn’t true, as there are players who are capable enough of playing the game on the hardest difficulty, but may struggle with certain enemies that are over-tuned.
As Choi said, Neowiz needs to be meticulous and thorough in its balancing attempts, and not simply disregard everything as a «skill issue» as some players seem to prefer.
Lies of P: Overture is currently available on all consoles on which Lies of P has been released.
