Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines may seem like the average harem anime at first glance. However, it doesn’t even fall into the genre but rather focuses on failed romances, budding friendships, and the awkwardness that comes from watching those you chase after, find love elsewhere.
In a show about childhood friends, homewreckers, and those that are dragged into the drama, every character offers a familiar yet unique perspective on the complexities of love. Getting over it isn’t as easy as it sounds with plenty of bumps in the road. So which are the best characters resonate with us the most?
10 Yumeko Shikiya
A Strange Gag Character
Not every character gets the same attention to their backstories. In fact, Yumeko Shikiya is an enigma who pops up and leaves before you can process anything that just happened. She acts zombie-like with her low speaking tone and wobbly way of walking.
She has no filter in how she acts and dwells in the shadows like the mysterious character that she is. However, she is still very much aware of what is going on around her, as she even points out the changes in dynamics between other characters.
9 Mitsuki Ayano
When You Miss Your Chance
Mitsuki plays a major role in Lemon’s story arc as the boy she failed to romance. At first, he comes off as simply oblivious to Lemon’s feelings, but later reveals just how new he is to the whole romance aspect of life.
It’s a case of missed timing where two characters have feelings for each other, but by the time they can come clean, both have missed their opportunity. It’s not a bad thing. In fact, it is one of the more realistic depictions of these missed romances, as they simply accept that they never got the timing right.
8 Sosuke And Karen
The Perfect Couple
Sosuke Hakamada and Karen Himemiya share a spot. Let’s be real, they are almost always in the same room together and are having the time of their lives in their newfound romance. Of course, their happiness comes at the expense of Anna, who secretly harbored feelings for Sosuke before being shot down.
These two are constantly in-your-face about how happy they are. They are perfectly in-sync, understanding each other without the need for words. This only makes Anna even more jealous as she buries herself in food and angst.
7 Sayo Konuki
The Literature Club’s New Advisor
There’s nothing like a snoopy character that just wants in on all the drama. Sayo Konuki is the school’s nurse who later becomes the literature club’s new advisor. She is always eager to find out what has been troubling everyone and even goes as far as to over-share her own experiences in love.
Deep down, Sayo Konuki truly does care about her students. She even shares a rivalry with Konami Amanatsu, one of the teachers who is herself a failing heroine. It just goes to show that some things never change.
6 Lemon Yakishio
Keeping It Together
Lemon Yakishio is not only cool and sporty, but she also offers one of the best perspectives as a losing heroine. She isn’t flat-out rejected, but watches her high school crush get into a relationship anyway. This prompts her to bury her own feelings and put her former crush’s needs ahead of her own.
Unlike Anna Yanami’s more jealous reactions, Lemon tries to be the better person and let those feelings go. However, she eventually lets those feelings slip, creating some of the most relatable tension.
5 Chika Komari
Shy But Sweet
Chika Komari is the short, quiet-type who doesn’t always express what she is feeling. This can lead her to stay silent when it comes to matters of love. Yet she becomes brave enough to express her feelings only to step foot in the middle of a ‘will they, won’t they’ situation. Her confession only makes her target realize his feelings for someone else.
Despite losing the battle, Chika Komari is further pushed out of her shell by those who share similar experiences. She shoulders plenty of responsibility when preparing for the school festival as she grapples with loneliness and her true search for social interaction.
4 Kaju Nukumizu
A Loyal Little Sister
Kaju Nukumizu is Kazuhiko’s younger sister and constant support throughout the series. She meddles with her brother’s non-existent love life and takes it upon herself to motivate him to be more outgoing.
Considering their parents are rarely ever seen, she takes a more mature role in the family dynamic. She cooks, cleans, offers sage advice, and even welcomes guests with open arms. She is one of the friendliest characters in the series and always willing to lend a hand, even though she doesn’t even go to the same school.
3 Kazuhiko Nukumizu
Doing His Best To Stay Out Of It All
Kazuhiko Nukumizu is a chill protagonist. He’s not particularly interested in romance, yet constantly finds himself in situations where he has to comfort the many losing heroines of the series. After stumbling upon one of Anna Yanami stealing an indirect kiss from a straw, they are drawn together in friendship.
Kazuhiko is the everyman in the situation. Yet he is never relegated to a blank slate male protagonist. He has a very reluctant personality but deeply cares for those he befriends. Even when pushed into even more awkward situations, he genuinely finds interest in what his new friends have to say.
2 Koto Tsukinoki
The Winner Of The Day
Koto Tsukinoki is the opposite of a losing heroine. In fact, she is one of the few victors in the whole friend group. As one of the oldest members of the literature club, she is more mature than the other characters, but at times can be just as dense.
Unlike Lemon, Koto manages to land her childhood friend even if she completely dismisses his original confession. Though to be fair, the original proposal flew over her head and she accidentally rejected him. After revealing her feelings, though, she is able to set things straight.
1 Anna Yanami
Chaotic And Dealing With Heartbreak Her Own Way
Anna Yanami is the highlight of Too Many Losing Heroines. She has an excellent taste for food, but also has some pretty down-to-earth and realistic responses to her situation. Like many of the other characters, she fails to win over her crush and develops a close friendship with Naju Nukumizu.
However, she makes it clear that this isn’t a case of finding love somewhere else. She is still hurt and needs time to focus on other things aside from romance. She can get jealous and petty over seeing her old flame enjoying the sweet romantic life, making her funny to watch but also relatable to anyone who has ever been in her situation.
