Apple TV+ is premiering its star-studded, highly anticipated series Margo’s Got Money Troubles. Much of the conversation around the comedy‑drama has focused on its candid portrayal of modern s*x work and personal agency. Based on Rufi Thorpe’s 2024 novel, the story follows Margo (Elle Fanning), a recent college dropout and aspiring writer who becomes a mother after an affair with her college professor. Struggling financially, she turns to OnlyFans to support herself and her baby.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Thorpe revealed that before writing the novel, she approached real OnlyFans creators, and their input ultimately reshaped a key narrative choice. In early drafts of the book, Margo’s connection with a customer named JB included her returning the money he spent on her content as proof of her feelings.

After hearing from creators who said that returning the money she had earned implied something wrong about her work, author Thorpe changed it in the book. However, when the series was adapted for TV, the entire JB love storyline was ultimately removed.

One of the most discussed changes from the book to the series is the removal of Margo’s love story with JB. She revealed that the adaptation team tried to keep Margo’s love connection with JB, but the transition from novel to television posed challenges. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said:

The dropping of the love story came later. They tried to keep all of the JB love story, but there was just too much material. It was really jarring to move from some of the more dramatic moments to flirting on your phone. They’re not in the same room together, and you can do that kind of thing in novels but it just doesn’t translate to the screen. We tried to make it work but it’s just too different a medium.

This feels like a necessary move. A text-based romance may work in a novel, but it might slow things down when translated to the screen. The change will likely keep the focus on Margo’s growth while staying true to the authenticity Thorpe gained from speaking with real OnlyFans creators.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles had its New York premiere on April 8, 2026, held at Regal Union Square. Elle Fanning, who plays Margo, opened up about how she approached the role and what she learned about OnlyFans while preparing for the series. Speaking on the red carpet with USA Today, she said:

For Margo, OnlyFans is almost like a life preserver for her because she is trying to provide for her child. And also she was, at the start of the series, she’s an aspiring writer and that dream kind of goes away and once she has her baby and she drops out of college. And so once she finds OnlyFans at first it’s a form of income and then it turns into this creative awakening again where she gets to be a writer. She gets to create those hungry ghost character and find anatomy and power and herself.

Fanning continued,

And I also enjoyed doing research, and Rufi the author had done a lot of research and talked to certain girls and yeah I definitely learned a lot.

Fanning’s insight makes it clear the show isn’t just about making money, it’s about reclaiming identity. That perspective feels fresh and better aligned with real-world conversations about digital work and ownership. By the looks of the storyline and star-studded cast, the series has the potential to be a hit this April. And that angle could be what sets this series apart from typical portrayals of online work. Will the audience connect with this more nuanced portrayal of digital work?

The series stars Elle Fanning alongside Nicole Kidman, Nick Offerman, Greg Kinnear, Thaddea Graham, Michael Angarano, Rico Nasty, Annalise Basso, and more. Created by David E. Kelley, the show premieres globally on April 15, 2026, with three episodes, followed by weekly releases through May 20, 2026.
