Does Mark Wahlberg’s The Perfect Storm Hold Up in 2026?
Based on the real-life storm that claimed the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail and its six-member crew, the movie largely sticks the landing when it comes to reenacting the visceral storms that keep the audience on the edge.
Even though some of the VFX work can feel a bit dated, for the most part, it holds up really well, even by modern standards, which explains why it landed an Oscar nod upon its release. The chemistry between the crew also holds up, especially when it comes to George Clooney and Wahlberg.
Unlike Titanic, however, the romantic subplot, featuring Wahlberg and Diane Lane, doesn’t quite stick the landing. Moreover, the cheesy melodrama, which is very reminiscent of the early 2000s following its emphasis on heroic speeches and James Horner’s swelling score, can feel overtly earnest.
That said, despite its issues, both tonal and pacing, especially when it comes to the first half, the movie is undoubtedly a crowd-pleaser that boasts rewatchability.
The Perfect Storm Streaming Guide: How to Watch it Online
The disaster epic is now heading to a new streaming home on Peacock. It was added on January 1, 2026, as part of a huge string of major releases, which includes timeless classics like The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining (via US Weekly).
Clocking in at 130 minutes, the movie is definitely an enjoyable watch, especially once it gets past its initial half, which suffers from some pacing issues, as the build-up to the more enthralling storm sequences drags a bit.
Even though this isn’t exactly a timeless classic like other notable entries in the genre, the characters and story are mostly told right and stay true to Sebastian Junger’s non-fiction book about the entire tragedy.
