Luke Grimes has returned as Kayce Dutton in the CBS spinoff of Yellowstone, Marshals. The 2024 Yellowstone finale seemed to have closed the book on Kayce’s turbulent journey, but he’s been pulled back into the Taylor Sheridan world once again. Now, he’s not just a rancher fighting for land; Kayce has stepped into a new role as a U.S. Marshal.
After selling most of the Dutton ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation in the Yellowstone finale, Kayce kept East Camp for a quieter future with Monica and their son, Tate. But Marshals reveals that peace was short-lived. The series follows his reluctant return to a life of service in Montana’s rugged frontier.
Luke Grimes’ Kayce Grieving After the Tragedy in Marshals

The biggest shock in Marshals Season 1 is the death of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille). The premiere confirmed she died before the events of the series. Also, the episode has hinted that she died of cancer, believed to be linked to toxic contamination near the Broken Rock Reservation. Undoubtedly, her death is casting a heavy emotional shadow over Kayce and Tate’s lives at East Camp.
Meanwhile, a protest erupts demanding accountability for environmental damage. Kayce is assisting the U.S. Marshals, and he finds himself in the middle of this escalating unrest. He urges his son, Tate, to head home before the situation gets worse. But Tate denies, reminding him of the cause of his family’s tragedy.
When a bomb detonates during the demonstration, seriously injuring tribal chairman Thomas Rainwater, Kayce is pulled back into action. His former Navy SEAL teammate Pete “Cal” Calvin, now leading a U.S. Marshals unit, recruits him to help investigate. The case leads to a hostage rescue and the exposure of a larger conspiracy behind the bombing.
By the end of Episode 1, Kayce acknowledges what Monica always knew about him: he is a protector at heart. Standing at her grave, he tells her he is choosing a new path for himself and Tate, ultimately accepting the U.S. Marshals badge.
Luke Grimes Reveals Why He Agreed to Marshals

Luke Grimes has admitted that he initially hesitated to return. When Yellowstone ended, he believed Kayce’s story was complete. But a call from creator Taylor Sheridan changed his mind to return in the Yellowstone spin-off. In an interview with USA Today, Grimes said,
I was really on the fence when Taylor called and said: ‘I’m not going to tell you to do it, or not to do it. But meet them, because it’s a good idea for a show.’ This character is really his baby. But he really wanted this thing to take wings on its own.
While Sheridan is helming the show, he is the executive producer of the spin-off. Spencer Hudnut is running the show.
In Marshals, Kayce helped his military buddy Cal in the U.S. Marshals team, reluctantly at first. Because the criminals operate in remote Montana terrain near Yellowstone, horseback pursuits remain part of the action. But beyond the cases of the week, Grimes was drawn to keeping Kayce’s emotional core intact. Grimes explained,
Kayce is not one to shy about emoting; that’s what always set him apart on ‘Yellowstone’ with a lot of these really hard people. Not every badass, not every cowboy, has to be this rough guy who doesn’t feel things.
It ultimately convinced Grimes that the spinoff could honor Kayce’s roots while giving him a new purpose.
