Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are once again joining forces, reviving the creative partnership that produced the iconic 1991 psychological thriller Cape Fear. Apple TV+ has greenlit the series, and the legendary filmmakers are executive producing the modern television adaptation. The series will premiere globally on Friday, June 5, 2026, with the first two episodes. New episodes will follow weekly on Apple TV+ through July 31, 2026 (via Apple TV+).
The 10-episode series is written by showrunner Nick Antosca, known for acclaimed true-crime dramas like The Act and A Friend of the Family. The Cape Fear series is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners, which previously inspired the 1962 movie starring Gregory Peck and the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese.
The series is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. It centers on happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden, whose seemingly stable lives begin to unravel when Max Cady, a notorious killer from their past, is released from prison.

Javier Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady, previously portrayed by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and Robert De Niro in the 1991 movie. He is also serving as an executive producer. The series marks Bardem’s another high-profile collaboration with Apple following his film F1.
Patrick Wilson stars as Tom Bowden, one-half of the central married couple. Amy Adams will play Anna Bowden. Unlike the previous movies, her character is given a more active and professionally driven role. The supporting cast includes CCH Pounder, Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Jamie Hector, Malia Pyles, and Anna Baryshnikov.
Behind the scenes, the series is executive produced by Spielberg and Scorsese, alongside Antosca, Alex Hedlund (Eat the Cat), and Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. The Project is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin Television.
Patrick Wilson Says Cape Fear Series Is Not a Reboot

Patrick Wilson, who stars as Tom Bowden, has emphasized that the series should not be viewed as a reboot of the earlier films. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, he describes it as an evolution of the novel and previous adaptations, noting that the show is “adding characters” and “changing some things”. He also shared that the show is “a whole different beast,” while emphasizing that it still keeps “the nuts and bolts” of the original story intact.
Talking about the changes, the 1962 movie largely followed MacDonald’s novel; it altered Max Cady’s fate. Scorsese’s movie version pushed the material further with heightened violence and another revised ending. Now, Apple TV+’s one of the biggest changes is the expanded focus on the Bowdens’ marriage. Both Tom Bowden and Anna Bowden are attorneys, but in previous movies, the wife’s professional life was undefined.
Wilson explained that the chance to work under the creative banner of Scorsese and Spielberg was a major draw. At this stage of his career, Wilson said filmmakers matter more than roles. Reflecting on a prior experience with Spielberg, he shared,
I spent a day with Spielberg once auditioning kids – long story – and it was awesome. I’d love to do a movie with him. [There’s] no real bucket-list role, just filmmakers. And Noah [Baumbach] was one of them. I don’t live in this comedy space a lot, so that was something I wanted to try.
With Scorsese and Spielberg revisiting Cape Fear through a contemporary lens, Apple TV+ is aiming big on prestige storytelling rooted in classic suspense.
