Marvel Rivals’ Season 3 is right around the corner. NetEase Games dropped a Season 3 trailer and Vol. 7 of the «Dev Vision» series that dives into what players can expect from Season 3. Two new heroes will join the roster. Players can work to earn tokens for the new Symbiote-themed battle pass. Marvel Rivals (Rivals for short) will also be introducing some new cosmetics, a new map, and new collectible accessories.
This article will cover everything new coming to Rivals Season 3. It’s important to keep in mind that this article is about the new heroes, features, and rewards. The new season will be introducing updated hero balancing. It will also be making some serious changes to the Team-Ups. This article won’t touch much on actual changes to the gameplay, though. It will solely lay out all the new features coming in Season 3.
Marvel Rivals Introduces Two Heroes in Season 3
Two New Duelists Join the Fight
Marvel Rivals Season 3 drops on July 11, and with the new season comes plenty of new things to look forward to. Most notably, Season 3 will introduce two new heroes, Phoenix and Blade. Phoenix (Jean Grey) will be available at the beginning of Season 3, meaning she will be playable on July 11. Blade, who has been teased for a couple of seasons, will finally be introduced when Season 3.5 drops. Both new heroes are Duelists (DPS), designed to give the damage category more versatility.
«Jean Grey is a ranged duelist, wielding the overwhelming power of the Phoenix Force. She can pressure tightly grouped enemies head-on, or use her agile mobility to disrupt formations from the flank. Her unique chain reaction mechanic delivers a whole new level of gameplay satisfaction. Additionally, her Ultimate, where she merges with the Phoenix Force, doesn’t just deal massive damage, it also has a special ability to clear enemy summons from the battlefield.»
— Creative director Guangguang describes Jean Grey’s abilities during Dev Vision Vol. 7
As described by Rivals‘ creative director, Guangguang, Jean Grey is a ranged duelist who can work as a flank character or a front-line hero. Her abilities allow her to take on multiple enemies at once, but the real star of her kit is her Ultimate ability. When merging with the power of the Phoenix Force, Jean can wipe out the enemy team and any summons on the field. This includes things like Loki’s clones, Peni Parker’s Bionic Spider-Nest, and Rocket Raccoon’s B.R.B. beacon.
As mentioned, Blade will be added to the game in the Season 3.5 update. The Dev Vision update didn’t elaborate much on Blade’s kit. We know that Blade will be a Duelist, though. In addition, Rivals Season 3 will introduce a new Symbiote-inspired map, Klyntar: Celestial Husk. This map is inspired by Knull waking up from a long slumber. In addition to the Symbiotes, Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, now has Hela, the Goddess of Death, by his side as well.
Season 3’s Battle Pass & Updates to Chrono Tokens
At the beginning of Dev Vision Vol. 7, Guangguang announced that seasons would be shorter. Seasons 1 and 2 lasted about 13 weeks, which is just slightly longer than 3 months. This season’s length has proven to be a bit cumbersome, as players easily complete the battle pass and events long before the end of the season.
To keep the game from growing stale or stagnant,
Marvel Rivals’ seasons will now only last two months. Each season will still be split in half, so Season 3 will run for one month and then Season 3.5 will be introduced and run for another month. The battle pass will remain unchanged. It will still include 10 costumes, and it will still cost the same amount of money. Currently, it is unknown if Rivals plans to continue introducing a minimum of two characters per season. With shorter seasons, it’s possible the dev team may drop to one hero per season.
While shorter seasons will hopefully keep players from growing bored, it does give people a shorter amount of time to finish each battle pass. To compensate for this, Marvel Rivals will be updating the way players can earn Chrono Tokens, the earnable currency used to unlock battle pass rewards. Simply put, players will be able to earn more Chrono Tokens for completing missions to make up for the shorter period of time players have per season.
Updates to the Mission System:
- Daily missions have been removed.
- Players won’t miss out on the rewards from daily missions. Instead, they’ll earn those Chrono Tokens elsewhere.
- Weekly missions are permanent. Once a player unlocks them, they will remain unlocked until the end of the season, so players can complete them at their own pace.
- While the weekly missions are permanent throughout the season, players still need to complete them in order. Players can’t just jump to week four’s missions if they haven’t done the first three weeks.
- New seasonal missions that last the entire season.
- These missions offer the most Chrono Tokens.
Power of the Phoenix Battle Pass
The Season 3 Power of the Phoenix Battle Pass includes 10 costumes inspired by Venom and the Phoenix Force. The battle pass offers an equal split of both, with 5 Phoenix-inspired outfits and 5 Symbiote-inspired outfits. In addition to the 10 costumes, the battle pass includes new emotes, name plates, sprays, MVPs, Unstable Molecules, and Lattice.
Phoenix-Inspired Skins:
- Black Panther’s rare Golden Panther costume
- Wolverine’s epic Weapon Phoenix costume
- Namor’s epic Phoenix King costume
- Adam Warlock’s rare King in White costume
- Emma Frost’s epic Phoenix Diamond costume
Symbiote-Inspired Skins:
- Squirrel Girl’s legendary Symbiote Squirrel costume
- Groot’s rare Symbiote Flora costume
- Spider-Man’s epic Black Suit costume
- Includes a dance emote inspired by Tobey Maguire’s dance in Spider-Man 3 (2007)
- Rocket Raccoon’s epic Symbiote Raccoon costume
- Jeff the Land Shark’s legendary Devouring Duo costume
Rivals Adds an Accessories System for More Hero Customization
Marvel Rivals is adding an accessories system that will allow players to exchange in-game currency for keychains and trinkets that can be worn by specific heroes. Players can earn currency for these new accessories by playing Quick Match and Competitive matches, meaning they won’t have to pay real money to get these cute little keychains. When these accessories are equipped, players will get a little dancing icon pop up on their screen when they achieve a KO. The first wave of accessories will be for the following heroes:
- Emma Frost
- Groot
- Invisible Woman
- Jeff the Land Shark
- Psylocke
- Rocket Raccoon
- Spider-Man
- Winter Soldier
In addition to the new accessories, Marvel Rivals is introducing new color palettes for even more outfits, like Scarlet Witch’s Immortal Sovereign costume and Invisible Woman’s Malice costume. Players will now be able to buy Ultimate VFX to add to certain costumes too. The Immortal Sovereign costume will be getting an Ultimate VFX that adds a dragon to her Ultimate ability. Both Ultimate VFX and new color pallets can be purchased with Unstable Molecules. Season 3 introduces the ability to earn Unstable Molecules through the battle pass and limited-time event rewards.
