The following contains major spoilers for The New Avengers #1, on sale June 11 from Marvel Comics.
Two of Marvel Comics’ hottest heroes are leading the charge against Doctor Doom with a whole new kind of New Avengers.
The New Avengers #1 opens to find Bucky Barnes, better known as the Winter Soldier, catching up with one of his old friends at their gas station in the middle of the New Mexico desert. Unfortunately for said friend, Bucky knows they have been selling out their neighbors to Doctor Doom’s regime. As such, the Winter Soldier has to make an example of the man by setting the gas station ablaze. Of course, that is nothing compared to what Natasha Romanova, better known as the Black Widow, has in store for the two of them, and her plans go far beyond a long-overdue romantic rendezvous.

The New Avengers is set during Doctor Doom’s global takeover. While the Winter Soldier and his allies have already faced off against Doom’s regime, and more specifically his own iteration of the Thunderbolts, in the pages of Thunderbolts: Doomstrike by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Tommaso Bianchi, the heroes were far from able to bring it crumbling down around the Latverian dictator. Still, Bucky and his allies left quite an impression on Doom, and they are nowhere close to finished fighting back against the infamous villain.
The latest New Avengers series is set to pit its eponymous team of heroes against a whole new kind of threat. Leading the charge are the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, who will have plenty of backup in the form of some truly astonishing teammates. From the main cover of the series’ first issue, fans can catch a glimpse of former Avengers such as the Hulk and Namor right alongside Bucky and Natasha. Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, also makes an appearance, as does the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension herself, Clea Strange. Perhaps most surprising is the presence of the Marvel Universe’s most murderous symbiote, Carnage, who is currently bonded to none other than the former King in Black, Eddie Brock.

Bucky and Natasha need allies who will do anything to take the duplicates out — but wrangling a team of killers and monsters presents its own dangers.
