Mass Effect Fans Would Actually Be Okay With BioWare Picking A Canon Ending For The Next Game, According To This Poll

Here is a fact-based summary of the story contents: Here is a simplified version of the story contents: Here is a lighthearted take on the story contents: Explore a different perspective:

Mass Effect 5 will be the next game from BioWare, but it certainly won’t be an easy story to tell. Mass Effect 3 let us choose between three very different endings, each with huge ramifications for the lore going forward. One would mean that all organic and synthetic life is now joined as one. Then, with the other extreme, all synthetic life is killed, wiping out both the Reapers and the Geth (and probably EDI).

Mass Effect: Andromeda avoided having to address this by setting the game in another galaxy, where the consequences would not be felt. However, with Mass Effect 5 promos already teasing Liara’s return, it looks like we’re going to get a game with ties to the original trilogy — it’s just unclear how that is even possible.

Now, it turns out BioWare might have an easier time of it than expected because, as it happens, there are a whole lot of fans who wouldn’t mind having a canon ending chosen as a jumping-off point. According to a poll of the Mass Effect subreddit, 55.5 percent of respondents want Mass Effect 5 to establish the destroy ending as Shepard’s canonical choice at the end of Mass Effect 3, regardless of what players actually chose.

Mass Effect Fans Want The Destroy Ending To Be Made Canon

According to the poll, the second most popular choice would be for the synthesis ending to be made canon instead, which is only then by having players import their own ending. This makes control and refuse the least popular endings.

There’s much more to be gleaned from the other questions too. For example, most players are ready to move on from Commander Shepard, with 68 percent wanting to play as a new protagonist. There are still a sizable amount of players who want to be Shepard again, as that sits at 30.1 percent. On the other hand, only 4.6 percent said they would want to play as Ryder again.

Finally, it’s amusing that I’ve opted to refer to the game as Mass Effect 5, because only 9.3 percent of respondents agree with me that this is what it should be called. Most want it to be Mass Effect: [subtitle goes here], whereas 30.1 percent would rather it was called Mass Effect 4, ignoring Mass Effect: Andromeda.

In any case, it sounds like the next Mass Effect game is years away. BioWare just underwent widespread layoffs, cutting the jobs of every writer who had worked on the Dragon Age series, which includes a few folks who had worked on the Mass Effect trilogy too. We were told that a «core» team is working on Mass Effect, but that it is not ready to kick off with a bunch of devs and writers being brought on board just yet.
