May 11 is Going to Be a Big Day for Virtua Fighter Fans

Sega has announced a new reveal event centered around the next Virtua Fighter game will take place in a matter of hours, on May 11. It has been nearly 20 years since the original release of the last mainline Virtua Fighter series game, 2006’s Virtua Fighter 5.

Though literal decades and multiple console generations have passed since the last time an entirely new Virtua Fighter graced players’ screens, there’s no denying that the series still remains among the most influential fighting games of all time. The original Virtua Fighter was one of the first major 3D fighting games, and even today the series’ distinct playstyle still maintains a dedicated population of fans.

Now Sega has announced what it’s calling a «Virtua Fighter Direct» event for May 11, 2025, at 7:00 AM PT, 9:00 AM ET, and 2:00 PM BST. The event promises to reveal «new developments» in the Virtua Fighter series. Though Sega didn’t outline the program in detail, it’s likely that the event will formally unveil the game fans have been calling Virtua Fighter 6, which teased in-engine concept footage back in January.

Beyond that concept footage and the fact that Yakuza/Like A Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is working on the game, almost nothing concrete is known about the new Virtua Fighter game. The reveal event is likely to expand more on the original concept footage, which featured highly evolved visuals and a mirror match between two versions of Virtua Fighter poster character Akira. Sega could use the event to show off actual gameplay, confirm a release window, and announce target platforms, which are likely PC and current-generation consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.

Though it has been quite a while since the original release of Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, the game has maintained a consistent presence at major fighting game events and in the community for years. Sega even refreshed the game’s reputation somewhat with the recent release of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. on PC, which added game-changing rollback netcode and support for the higher performance thresholds enabled by modern PC hardware.

Reaction to the announcement was excited, with fans rejoicing at the chance to learn more about Virtua Fighter 6. Some hoped that Sega will have more to say about the future of Virtua Fighter on PC, expressing hope that, as with the release of R.E.V.O., Sega would be incorporating PC as a standard platform rather than an afterthought compared to consoles. Whatever Sega chooses to show off on the day, fans will have more to look forward to from the beloved franchise.
