McDonald’s Japan removes popular food customization requests

McDonald’s customers in Japan are no longer able to request some popular food and drink customizations after new ordering rules took effect on July 1.

According to notices posted by McDonald’s Japan restaurants, translated from Japanese, the changes were introduced “to provide products that meet McDonald’s standards.”

As of writing, it’s not clear if the changes are being blanket applied to every McDonald’s restaurant in Japan, or only in select outlets.

McDonald’s Japan changes what customers can request

According to the translated notices, requests for extra or reduced amounts of burger ingredients, including examples such as sauce, onions and pickles, will no longer be accepted.

Other translated examples listed as no longer available include requests for extra salt, less salt or salt served separately with fries, less ice in drinks, and having Soft Twist served in a cup instead of a cone.

The translated notices also list examples of requests that will continue to be accepted, including burgers without sauce or pickles, fries without salt and drinks without ice.

It’s unknown if the notices indicate whether the translated examples represent every customization option affected by the changes.

While the notices appear to have been posted by multiple McDonald’s Japan restaurant locations, McDonald’s has also not published a corresponding news release explaining the policy on its corporate news page at the time of writing.

Elsewhere, the chain’s Japanese stores revealed earlier this month, a series of special menu items to celebrate the ongoing World Cup. Japan has since been knocked out of the tournament after losing 2-1 to Brazil.
