Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto has a plethora of characters, but there are very few who are as strong as Minato Namikaze, the fourth Hokage of Konoha and Naruto Uzumaki’s father. He was an incredibly powerful individual who, despite his limited screentime, gained a lot of fame and recognition. However, Minato had a glaring weakness that everyone ignored.
Minato’s strength is certainly unprecedented, but his arsenal was kept very limited by the Naruto manga creator. It was one of his biggest weaknesses, but fans were more focused on Sakura, who was often criticized far more harshly than other characters. While the Naruto databook revealed that Minato had a variety of techniques and abilities, he only used a few of them, which made him look very limited and eventually nerfed his potential.
Why Minato’s Restricted Jutsu Arsenal Ultimately Held Him Back
Minato Namikaze was renowned all over the world as Konoha’s Yellow Flash within the Naruto storyline. He was considered one of the most powerful shinobi in history, as he was able to fight a tailed beast head-on. Furthermore, he was proficient in the nature transformations of Fire, Wind, Lightning, along with Yin and Yang Release. However, despite being such a versatile character, his arsenal had a limited number of jutsu that he truly used.
Minato’s arsenal in terms of jutsu included the Space-Time Ninjutsu, his Shurikenjutsu, and the Fuinjutsu, which he used to trap Kurama inside himself and his son, Naruto. While all of these jutsus are certainly powerful, considering the significance Minato had as a character and as the fourth Hokage of Konoha, they felt very limited and ultimately held him back within the Naruto storyline.

While he also developed his own techniques, like Rasengan, and could use Sage Jutsu for a limited period of time, Minato’s potential always seemed far greater than what was showcased. His mastery over the Flying Thunder God technique alone positioned him among the fastest and most tactically gifted shinobi in the history of Naruto, yet the narrative rarely explored the stronger possibilities of his abilities.

Minato Had the Potential, But Kishimoto Nerfed Him
Considering the details listed about his character and abilities within the databook, it is safe to assume that Minato had unlimited potential. He was already hyped within the story as one of the greatest individuals who could easily carry an entire arc by himself, but Masashi Kishimoto ultimately chose to limit his role in favor of developing the newer generation.
As a result, Minato appears more as a legendary inspiration, rather than a developing character. While it was an understandable decision in terms of the narrative, it also left many fans wishing they could have seen the extent of what the Fourth Hokage was truly capable of. Especially considering the hype that was created around his past developments and his strength as one of the most powerful characters in Naruto.
The love and appreciation that Naruto fans had for Minato suggested that he deserved a separate story for himself, and Kishimoto honored this wish by releasing Naruto Gaiden: Whirlwind in the Vortex. However, it was a one-shot manga with limited development, and fans still hope that the Naruto mangaka will someday write an entire story about Minato’s entire journey.
