Minecraft has paved the way for countless innovative games in the sandbox genre, and has inspired thousands of developers to create unique projects of their own. One Minecraft-inspired game has had a long and rocky journey, but by some sort of divine gaming miracle, is finally set for release this week.
The long-awaited Minecraft-inspired indie RPG Hytale is set to release in Early Access on January 13 (via Hytale.com) after being canceled and then revived again by its original developers at Hypixel Studios. Hytale is a standalone open-world sandbox game with fantasy RPG element from the developers behind the famous Hypixel Minecraft server.
Hytale Releases In Early Access On January 13

Hypixel Studios (and therefore Hytale itself) was bought out by Riot Games back in 2020, but ultimately ended up getting canceled in 2025 after years of development woes. However, the original Hypixel founders were able to cut a deal with Riot «to return to the legacy engine and original vision» of the game, giving fans the ability to actually play Hytale instead of seeing it die in obscurity.
While Hytale players may not be getting the massive scale that was once promised when the game was under Riot’s leadership, the current version still looks incredibly promising. Hytale will bring the fantastical Skyrim-esque RPG elements emblematic of the original Hypixel server, releasing in Early Access on January 13.
The Early Access period for Hytale is expected to last awhile, with developers not being in a rush and having a lot on their plate in terms of giving players the Hytale experience they believe is possible. The upcoming release will feature an Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, and Modding capabilities, however, with mini-games and Adventure Mode anticipated to roll out eventually during the Early Access period.
It's Been A Long Road For Hytale
Devs at Hypixel are not shy about the state of their game, and they may even be underselling it quite a bit to ensure nobody who purchases the game is surprised by any bugs or glitches. That said, gameplay footage itself suggests that fans have a lot to look forward to even in the Early Access stages.

Hypixel developers explain that «some parts of the game will feel behind» when it releases this week, but «this is a good moment for modders, server owners, and creators to step in early! They will play a significant role in Hytale’s future.» It’s been a long road for Hytale supporters, but the day has finally come where players can dive in and start creating and exploring for themselves.
You can pre-purchase one of three separate tiers for Hytale’s Early Access now—Standard, Supporter, and Cursebreaker—each giving players increasingly better benefits, such as unique weapon/armor sets. Just remember that the Early Access for Hytale is heavily caveated, and devs note that players should «expect bugs and changes as we work towards full release.»
