Monster Hunter Wilds is all about hunting monsters in the wilds. In order to win against all these terrifying beasts, you will want to know their weaknesses and moves beforehand. This will help you to know what is coming before you are standing at the monster’s front door.
One of the more challenging monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds is Rathian, a high-rank-only monster who is out to burn you. If you want to defeat it, you will want to know how to maneuver around all its moves, how to deal the most damage to it, and what element you should be hitting it with to get it down as quickly as possible.
Rathian Moveset
Rathian doesn’t have a whole lot of moves, thankfully, but many of them are very dangerous. In order to cut down on the range of most of its attacks and deal a ton of damage, you will want to cut off its tail as early as possible. Here are all the moves you need to look out for and which ones are shortened by tail removal so you can get this monster on farm in MHW.
Bites

This Monster Hunter Wilds monster will bite at you. This move will be preceded by Rathian picking up its wings, then swing its head around, biting several times in a row as you try to evade. You need to keep rolling backwards since this is a very short range attack.
Tail Swipe

Before it swipes its tail across the ground, Rathian will look back at its tail first. It will be a complete circle around its body, so you want to get out of its melee range. Roll backward or be between its legs to prevent getting hit.
Back Flip

The backflip move is the only one that brings Rathian up into the air. When it is airborne, it will then flip backwards, whipping its tail in front of it and poisoning whatever it hits. You can use flash pods to stop this move all together, or you can cut off the tail to shorten this move’s range and remove its ability to poison you. There is a variation of this one where it will run at you and roar, then backflip from the ground. You can stop this move the same way; either backroll or flash pod it.
Charge

Rathian will charge several times in a row unless you interrupt it. Look for it to open its mouth, roar, and put its head down, point its mouth directly at you. When it charges, it will keep coming toward you three times, then bite. The best thing to do is interrupt it.
Fire Breath

There is also a firebreath attack you need to be wary of. Rathian will open its mouth, mantle its wings, lean its head down, then spit out a spurt of fire. You want to be out of melee range for this one, and roll away as soon as it leaves Rathian’s mouth.
Rathian Weaknesses and How to Fight
In order to take down Rathian, you will want to know what its weaknesses are, what the best things to take with you are, and how to deal the most damage. Below is a breakdown of the most important items to know how this monster battle.
- Bring lots of flash pods and the materials for more flash pods with you to make this fight incredibly easy.
- Always aim for the head regardless of which type of weapon you are using to deal the most damage.
- This monster is immune to fire and takes the most damage from dragon weapons.
- It can poison as well as Fireblight you.
- Cut off its tail as quickly as possible to prevent poison damage and shorten its attack range for several of its attacks.
- Rathian is not available until High Rank is unlocked.
