The Final Fantasy crossover with Magic: The Gathering will let players run the most unusual deck of all, as it’s possible to have a cube consisting entirely of the various Cids that appeared throughout the series.

With the exception of the first entry in the series, each Final Fantasy game has a character named Cid. Usually, these are older scientists or engineers, most of whom are allies of the party. A handful of Cids are party members, while one has been a villain.

Final Fantasy fans were expecting the Cids to show up in the Magic: The Gathering crossover, but they probably weren’t expecting all of them to be playable in one deck. It was revealed that this was possible during a panel at PAX East, with artwork of all fifteen Cids revealed.

All of the fifteen Cids are identical in terms of mechanics. The Cid, Timeless Artificer cards are 4/4 creatures that cost four mana (one blue, one white, and two of any color), with Cycling, letting the player spend a white and a blue mana to discard the card to draw a card.

It’s the other mechanics on the Cid cards that make them interesting, as it’s stated that the player can have as many Cid, Timeless Artificer cards in their deck as they want. This bypasses the usual four copies of each non-land card in most formats or one in Commander rule.

Additionally, all Artifact creatures and Heroes get +1/+1 for each Artificer the player controls or is in the graveyard. This means Cids could be very powerful in certain decks, especially as they can mill themselves for cheap using Cycling to put them in the graveyard for the bonus modifiers.

Whether all Cids or a lot of Cids decks are viable remains to be seen, especially as the rest of the Final Fantasy crossover set hasn’t been revealed yet, chances are, popping a few Cids into certain decks is a huge benefit, especially ones using hero tokens.
