Magic: The Gathering’s Secrets of Strixhaven set is nearly here, and to whet your appetite for knowledge, we have an exclusive reveal for an instant hit at the Draft table. Check out Tragedy Feaster below.

Wizards of the Coast has decided to hold its back-to-school festivities a little late in the year with the impending release of Magic: The Gathering Secrets of Strixhaven. Following some Universes Beyond shenanigans with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, MTG is treading familiar ground with a return to the titular College of Mages.

After a successful foray into the fan favorite Plane(s) of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, longtime players can look forward to once again walking the halls of Strixhaven. While each of the school’s five Colleges has something to offer, we’re about to make a pretty compelling case for the necromantic druids of Witherbloom.

We’ve got an exclusive card reveal for MTG Secrets of Strixhaven that is sure to excite any Black players, and perhaps even create some new ones. As well as the standard variant of the card, we’re also able to showcase its Borderless Field Notes treatment. Behold: Tragedy Feaster.

Tragedy Feaster is a nasty mono-Black Demon Creature destined to be a mid-game hitter with its two Colorless, two Black Mana cost. Don’t let that cost fool you, however; it’s far from prohibitive thanks to Tragedy Feaster’s insane 7/6 stat line.

Ordinarily, a 7/6 Trampler on turn four would prompt opponents to immediately target this Demon for removal, but some madman on the balancing team also gave it Ward at the cost of a Discard. To offset this extensive toolkit, the card forces you to sacrifice a Permanent in your end step if you haven’t gained any life that turn.

Between the Warding cost and potential sacrifices, this does mean that Tragedy Feaster has the potential to chew through your deck. Fortunately, it belongs to MTG Secrets of Strixhaven’s Witherbloom archetype, and the Golgari (Black/Green) combo is all about life gain and drain this set.

There’s already a bunch of life-gain options shown off in the Witherbloom cards revealed so far, and the traditional Golgari playstyle doesn’t mind having a few cards in your Graveyard either. With some strategic deckbuilding and careful play to manage its pitfalls, Tragedy Feaster is sure to be a nightmare on the Secrets of Strixhaven Draft tables and has some definite utility within life-gain Commander decks

To top off its on-board offerings, Tragedy Feaster features stellar art by Raph Lomotan, whose previous work on Eldrazi creatures like Inversion Behemoth and Glaring Fleshraker has clearly helped them nail the Demon’s otherworldly look. Rimas Valeikis gives us the fun and thematic Borderless Field Notes treatment straight out of a Strixhaven student’s journal.
