Ahead of the next Resident Evil movie reboot coming to theaters, big fans of the franchise can currently check out the new documentary George A. Romero’s Resident Evil. After it was released digitally at the start of the year, the new doc, which is a must-see movie for Resident Evil fans, is easier to watch than ever.
Currently, George A. Romero’s Resident Evil is streaming for free on the Flix For Free channel on YouTube. This comes three years after the film was first announced and seven months after its initial release. It is directed by Brandon Salisbury, who also wrote it with Robbie McGregor. Thomas Touhey and Joel Welsh produced.
The Resident Evil franchise has been a hit since the release of the first game in 1996. After its success, plans were put in place for a feature film adaptation to be made. Famously, director Paul W. S. Anderson helmed a series of films featuring Milla Jovovich in the lead. However, some fans may not know that horror icon George A. Romero was the first choice to make a Resident Evil movie. That would have been significant for Romero to take on the project, as his classic zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead inspired the franchise to begin with.
Of course, the project was not meant to be, fizzling out in development hell before Anderson took over. George A. Romero’s Resident Evil does a deep dive into the complete story of the unrealized film adaptation, detailing why the planned film did not get made. Archival footage along with new interviews are used to give fans an idea of why the project collapsed.
Longtime fans of the franchise will appreciate the doc, especially those who are particularly fond of the first game. The doc was filmed in a mansion, meant to capture the vibe of the Spencer Mansion which served as the setting of the first Resident Evil. Pablo Kuntz, who voiced the villain Albert Wesker in the original game, also served as the narrator for the doc. Big fans will be able to recognize the Wesker voice right away.
