Netflix’s Batman Beyond Remake Is a DC Goldmine, It Can the Real Reason Bruce Timm Hated It

Batman Beyond animated series should be brought back. And we hope Netflix has the potential to revive the nostalgic tale of a young Dark Knight.

Batman Beyond is by far one of the most loved series of a ’90s kid. While hair was raised with the entry that Batman: The Animated Series made, jaws dropped with Terry McGinnis’ Caped Crusader.

Back in the day, Batman Beyond ruled over the TV screens, but on the creator’s end, it was a totally different struggle. However, all of those issues can be left behind if Netflix revives the classic series, bringing in a totally new take on the ever-loved superhero.

The streaming giant recently made a huge bid to buy the Warner Bros. Studio. A report by Bloomberg also suggests that in this second round of auction, Paramount Skydance Corp. was involved as well.

What Is Batman Beyond About & Why It’s Labeled DC Gold Standard

Batman Beyond first aired on television back on January 10, 1999. It was divided into a two-part premiere episode, titled Rebirth: Part l and Rebirth: Part ll. The story revolves around the character of Terry McGinnis, a high school student on a path to becoming the Dark Knight. Most importantly, he is guided and mentored by the experienced Bruce Wayne.

What made this animated series a fan favourite was its tone and period setting. It was first introduced on Kids: WB, having a light tone. However, over the course of its run, the series gradually took on a darker tone.

The series felt special due to the relatable angles that everyone could connect with. It’s a simple story set in a dystopian future, following a high school kid. He is filled with rage, has a girlfriend, and wants to prove his worth to the world.

Moreover, the fighting sequence showed Terry struggling and even getting beaten up. Which at times felt real, unlike the ruthless Batman from the Animated Series, who is a perfect hitter.

Bruce Timm’s Comment Proves Batman Beyond Has Room to Improve

This might come as a shock, but Terry McGinnis was first introduced through the animated series, not the comics. While both the entries came out in 1999, a Batman Beyond comic was released in March.

This meant that the creators had no background to follow, but a lurking skepticism. What made their work even more challenging was the pressure from the studio to get it done in no time.

As per Bruce Timm, who spoke to IGN back in 2020,

Once I came around on it, we had to hit the ground running. We had no time to develop the show. And we were still finishing up ‘The New Batman Adventures.’ So we were doing two shows at the same time. We didn’t have scripts, we didn’t have characters, we hadn’t done any of the world building yet. It was a mad dash. We were making stuff up on the fly

In case Netflix plans to reboot the series, the creators, writers, and animators will have practical deadlines that will make the series even more exciting.

Netflix Buying WB Can Signal a Grassroots-Level DCAU Return

With Netflix eyeing Warner Bros.’s HBO services and Warner Bros. Studios, we can hope for the much-needed resurrection of the DC Animated Universe.

The universe was kick-started by the legendary Batman: The Animated Series. Then came the spin-offs and feature-length movies. The universe included Batman Beyond as well as Superman: The Animated Series, playing the core part along with Justice League

Here’s a table of the DCAU entries.

Entries Release Date Where to Watch Seasons
Batman: The Animated Series 1992 Netflix 4 Seasons
Batman Beyond 1999 HBO Max 3 Seasons
Superman: The Animated Series 1996 HBO Max 3 Seasons
Justice League 2001 Netflix 2 Seasons

A whole new take by Netflix would promise the revival of everyone’s nostalgic series, just like X-Men ‘97 has been renewed by Disney+.

Let us know what you think of a Batman Beyond revival.

Batman Beyond is available on HBO Max.
