Netflix’s sports romance, Finding Her Edge, will be released in just two weeks, making up for a disappointing TV show cancellation from 2020.
The romance genre is undergoing a bit of an on-screen renaissance right now, with many bold new releases and exciting upcoming romance TV shows. Although they’ve been dominating the book sphere for a while, sports romances are especially growing in popularity onscreen.
However, this isn’t the first time the subgenre has tried to find its place in television. Back in 2020, a fantastic sports romance drama called Spinning Out released, but Netflix canceled it too soon. Luckily, a January 2026 release will make up for the disappointment.
Netflix Prematurely Cancelled Spinning Out In 2020

The TV show Spinning Out released on January 1, 2020, and the sports drama captivated audiences. The YA show s an up-and-coming figure skater named Kat Baker whose Olympic dreams are dashed after a skating accident. However, she gets a second chance when she partners up with the charming figure skater, Justin, who is the very definition of the word “trouble.”
To succeed, she would have to face her family history, her post-injury fear, and her tense relationship with Justin. The show included a great exploration of mental health. Additionally, based on the first season, it feels like they were on track to create an enemies-to-lovers relationship between the two skating partners. There was so much good about the show.
Unfortunately, despite positive reviews from audiences, Netflix canceled the show after just one season, citing low viewership as the reason. Since then, we haven’t really gotten a good figure skating romance. Luckily, an upcoming show could make up for that.
Netflix’s Adaptation Of Finding Her Edge Will Explore Themes Of Family Legacy & Love

Netflix is bringing the book Finding Her Edge by Jennifer Iacopelli to the small screen. The story is a YA figure skating sports romance that s an elite ice skater named Adriana Russo, who finds herself caught in a love triangle between her new skating partner, Brayden, and her former partner/first crush, Freddie. While trying to figure out her feelings, Adriana is persuaded to fake-date Brayden for the media.
What’s more, she must grapple with the pressure of financially providing for her family and family legacy, both of which affect her mentally. While Finding Her Edge isn’t expected to dive quite as deeply into mental health, it will still carry many of the same themes. Plus, the skating partner romance trope will be present.
Why Finding Her Edge Could Succeed Where Spinning Out Failed

Spinning Out came out at a time when sports romances and sports dramas weren’t as popular on television and in movies. However, that won’t be an issue for Finding Her Edge. Thanks to the breakthrough success of Heated Rivalry, onscreen sports romances are in high demand. What’s more, since they’re both skating-related sports, Finding Her Edge might be more appealing to audiences.

On top of that, Finding Her Edge won’t be quite as heavy and potentially triggering for audience members. The Spinning Out scenes with Kat’s mother were challenging for some viewers to watch. While Finding Her Edge explores Adriana’s mental state, it likely won’t include high-intensity, nervous-system-activating scenes between mother and daughter, as Spinning Out did.
