The writer of Absolute Wonder Woman has revealed a new look at one of DC’s most powerful magic users. The update offers an early glimpse at Zatanna’s reimagined appearance in the Absolute universe. It also hints at her key role in the series’ next arc.
Zatanna’s Absolute universe look revealed
Writer Kelly Thompson revealed the first official look at Zatanna’s design for DC Comics’ Absolute Wonder Woman in a Substack post shared on Nov. 2, 2025.
The images, illustrated by Hayden Sherman and colored by Jordie Bellaire, show the Absolute Universe version of the magician in a darker, reimagined costume. This version appears in Absolute Wonder Woman #14 and #16. The latter issue launches the “Season of the Witch” arc in January 2026.

According to Thompson’s post on Substack, the updated design features Zatanna with curly black hair and green eyes. She wears a black outfit accented by blue gloves and glowing magical energy effects.
“Expect to see her in Absolute Wonder Woman #14 (this month!) and again in Absolute Wonder Woman #16 (Jan), which kicks off the Season of the Witch arc,” Thompson wrote. Sherman’s cover for issue #16 shows Zatanna in a high-intensity pose, surrounded by swirling blue and white magical smoke.

Earlier issues set up Zatanna’s introduction to the Absolute Universe. As shown in Absolute Wonder Woman #12, Veronica Cale’s agency held Zatanna captive in Area 41. She was restrained to stop her from using magic. The upcoming issue’s solicitation confirms that she will be released to “kill a witch,” placing her in direct conflict with Diana Prince.
The solicitation for Absolute Wonder Woman #16 reads: “The Season of the Witch arc begins here! A new threat has emerged in Gateway City, and it turns out the best thing to send to kill Wonder Woman is… another witch! Zatanna is here, and Diana’s life will never be the same.”
