Titanfall 2 fans will soon have a new FPS mech shooter to play as Splitgate devs have finally revealed a trailer for their new game.

Despite the release of Marathon, Arc Raiders, and the shiny new Modern Warfare 4 on the horizon, the FPS market has been severely lacking in gigantic pilotable robots.

That’s about to change as Splitgate developers 1047 Games have given mech fans their first look at Empulse, an upcoming 6v6 movement shooter that looks like it could be our answer to Titanfall 3 (well, until Respawn fancies building big metal giants again).

Empulse brings Titanfall 2 action with a twist

On June 1, 1047 Games gave us our first look at Empulse, and it certainly wears its Titanfall inspirations proudly upon its metal sleeves. There’s wall-running, grappling hooks, and most importantly, sci-fi-style mechs that you can take control of.

“Our dream has always been to be a multi-game studio, and this is the kind of game we love making: a fast, arcade-style FPS gameplay that rewards player expression and skill. That is the type of gameplay we love, and Empulse is the purest version of that idea we have built so far,” wrote the devs via an announcement on Steam.

“We have a lot of Titanfall fans on this team, and we have heard a lot of the same from our community over the years. More movement. More verticality. More ways to express yourself in a fight. Empulse is our answer to that.”

While wallrunning and the grappling hook (always a must for any movement shooter) look familiar to Titanfall fans, the devs have added two new features that aim to mix things up.

Holojumps are a movement technique that the devs say has a feel of a “snowboard jump”, where you maintain momentum and chain it into your next move. Meanwhile, P.A.I.N.T. Bombs (Plasma Activated Infusion of Nano-Tech), a special throwable, can alter the terrain around when thrown.

Highguard is not a “new breed” of shooter – but it’s really good anyway

They offer speed boosts, jump boosts, open up new sightlines, and can even be used on yourself. Unlike Titanfall, the game’s most game-changing feature, the colossal mechs are actually something you have to fight for control over.

“Think of it like fighting over the rocket launcher in classic Halo, except this rocket launcher walks, has unique abilities, and a massive health pool,” says developer 1047 Games. “A mech in the right hands can take over a round. But focus on bringing one down as a Crew, and you can swing momentum right back.”

So, whether you’re still holding out hope for Titanfall 3 and want a new mech shooter, or just want to be among the first to go hands-on, you can do so by signing up for Empulse via the official website.
