New Star Fox game announced & fans aren’t happy

Following a beloved cameo in the Mario movie and tons of previous games, it’s safe to say Star Fox is one of the more popular Nintendo characters. Well, it’s now getting a brand new game, aptly named Star Fox, but fans aren’t pleased.

Beginning way back in 1993, the Star Fox franchise is a cult classic, bringing tricky ship combat, a loveable story, and even more loveable characters from Slippy Toad, Falco Lombardi (epic name), and the iconic Star Fox as their captain.

Since then, we’ve seen nine different iterations of the game, ranging from mainline additions to spin-offs and remakes of Star Fox 64 — perhaps one of Star Fox’s most popular releases. Now, a tenth is on the way following its announcement during the Star Fox Direct, but fans aren’t pleased with what they saw.

Star Fox has fans calling it “Nintendo’s Skyrim”

Sharing the news in a surprise Star Fox Direct, Nintendo revealed the upcoming Star Fox game, releasing on June 25, 2026, for the Switch 2.

However, this ‘new’ game was essentially revealed to be a remake of Star Fox 64, marking the second remake of that game since it was released in 1997.

The newest Star Fox promises to expand on the original game’s story, mechanics, battles, character designs, level designs, and multiplayer aspects, so you’ll still get a fair amount of new content (plus, it’ll look a lot clearer than its 1997 counterpart).

However, fans were not pleased, with many jokingly calling it “Nintendo’s Skyrim.” The general consensus among the community was that Star Fox is nothing more than another remake, and fans wanted a brand new game.

“Somehow, Star Fox 64 returned,” commented one fan, while another joked, “I think we’re all ready for Star Fox 65 at this point.” Others added, “Starfox has officially become Nintendo’s Skyrim,” and “I like how the Star Fox franchise is 80% one game.”

“The 64 in Star Fox 64 stands for how many times the game got remade,” joked another fan, summing up the sentiment.

Of course, as mentioned above, the game is seeing a lot of upgrades and a few extra features, but it’s clear the fans wanted a brand new game instead of the third iteration of Star Fox 64.
