A video was posted to the social media website TikTok that features a New York man explaining to police that a club bouncer took his real ID and is refusing to return it. According to the video, the officers are unable to help the gentleman.
Commenters were primarily on the side of the original poster, with many questioning whether the police involved knew how the law worked. An update to the incident was provided on the same person’s profile, and the situation didn’t seem to have improved.

The video above features a police officer speaking with the man recording at what looks to be some sort of outdoor area. You can hear the man explain to the officer that he was at a nearby nightclub when someone at the venue confiscated his REAL ID and is refusing to return it.
For context, a REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card with a star printed in the top-right corner. This type of identification is required to board domestic flights if passengers do not have a passport. Coincidentally, the man who posted the video had a flight the following day.
The officers responded to the man that they were unable to get his ID from the security guards, saying, “because they work here at the venue.” After a short confrontation, the officer said that she no longer wished to speak with him, which resulted in another officer entering the picture.
In an update, after being explained what happened, a second officer doubled down and told the group that the police would be unable to retrieve the ID, instead asking them to speak with a supervisor for the security company the bouncer works for. To this, a woman can be heard saying, “We tried; they won’t help us. That’s why we’re begging you for help.“

Various commenters sided with the man, with one person writing, “cop is 100% incorrect. they stole the id, he needs to call for a supervisor.” Similarly, another person write, “its a state document you can’t take it unless its fake.”
It is likely that the officers didn’t believe the identification was real, trusting that the security company at the nightclub had done the right thing. However, in an update, the creator wrote, “I requested the supervisor the supervisor came and said “hey, just get a number from them and see if you can get it later on.” The venue kept trying to have me removed from the property. Until they gave up and gave me id after 2 hours of waiting and trying to get the police to do something. I have a video of the supervisor interaction and it will be posted later.“
While the situation was ultimately resolved, the videos are continuing to go viral on TikTok, with people still leaving their opinions in the comments below.
