Famous New York actor Tom Cruise is facing a new personal setback after his daughter officially dropped his last name.
Suri Cruise has reportedly been estranged from her father, Tom Cruise, for many years. Following Cruise’s 2012 divorce from Katie Holmes, public reports indicated that he had little to no contact with Suri, although he continued to provide the financial support required under the terms of the divorce agreement.
Neither Tom Cruise nor Suri has publicly explained the reasons for their estrangement. However, media reports have frequently speculated that factors such as Cruise’s demanding career, extensive travel, and his involvement with the Church of Scientology may have contributed to the distance between them, although neither has confirmed those explanations. In recent years, reports have also suggested that Suri has chosen to live a private life with her mother, Katie Holmes, while maintaining little public connection to her father.
Now, Page Six reported the latest development in the father-daughter relationship. According to the publication, 20-year-old Suri Cruise has officially dropped “Cruise” from her name and is now using “Noelle” instead. The outlet reported that the change was confirmed after Suri registered to vote in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County under the name Suri Noelle, making it her legal name. The report also claimed that Suri had been using her mother’s middle name, Noelle, for several years before the change was publicly confirmed.
This is not the first time Suri has distanced herself from her father’s surname. During her graduation from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in June 2024, she chose not to use the Cruise surname in the ceremony program. Now, Suri is forging her own path in the entertainment industry. According to Page Six, she has already taken on several theater roles. She is also currently studying musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama.
Suri’s reported decision to stop publicly using her father’s last name has also drawn comparisons to a broader trend among some children of high-profile celebrities distancing themselves from a parent’s surname. Several of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children have done the same. They have publicly chosen to use the surname “Jolie” instead of “Pitt” in recent years. Some did so following the former couple’s highly publicized legal disputes.
While each family’s circumstances are different and the reasons behind these decisions have not always been publicly explained, the moves have sparked discussion about how the children of famous parents sometimes choose to establish their own identities or publicly distance themselves from one parent amid strained family relationships.
Fans Side With New York Actor’s Daughter
After the news broke, many fans sided with New York actor Tom Cruise’s daughter, Suri. Some argued that she made the right decision based on the reported estrangement from her father. “I really wish her the best. We can’t choose our parents,” one person wrote. Another commenter referenced Cruise’s association with the Church of Scientology. “It’s got to be pretty sick that you choose your religion over your kid,” they said.
More people applauded Suri for her reported decision. “Hopefully she stays as far away from that cult he’s involved with as possible,” one fan wrote. Others, however, sided with Tom Cruise and criticized his daughter instead. “He’s the greatest dude in the world,” one person claimed. Another commenter questioned Suri’s financial situation, writing, “Does severing ties mean severing monetary privileges? We see photos of her in NY wearing fashionable clothes. Will that continue?”
With Suri becoming one of the latest celebrity children to publicly distance herself from her father’s surname, the development has fueled discussion about whether similar decisions by other children of high-profile parents may continue in the future.
