Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 is powerful enough to play most third party triple-A games. The likes of Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 have been confirmed for it, and if it can run them smoothly, it should run anything. Making the Switch 2 more powerful was undoubtedly one of the main goals of the devs, but it has also come with a few new features.
Game Chat will allow you to chat with your friends and even see their faces if you shell out for a camera, and the JoyCon also doubles up as a mouse. There are a number of other minor updates, but these are by far the biggest ones. However, it seems ex-PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida thinks Nintendo should have done more.
Nintendo Should Have Done More With The Switch 2
In a conversation with the Easy Allies podcast (via Eurogamer), Yoshida mentioned that he was personally a bit disappointed by the Switch 2 simply being a souped up version of the Switch. He mentioned that while spec upgrades are important, Nintendo has always been innovative with hardware, but the Switch 2’s new features just didn’t land.
«To me it was a bit [of a] mixed message from Nintendo. In a sense I think Nintendo is losing their identity, in my opinion, he said. «For me, they’re always about creating some new experience, like designing hardware and games together to create some new experience. But Switch 2, as we all anticipated, is a better Switch, right?
«It’s a larger screen, more powerful processor, higher resolution, 4K 120fps. They even had their hardware person starting the stream as other platforms do! And, because it’s a better Switch, the core premise of the whole Switch 2 is — ‘we made things better’. And that’s something other companies have been doing all the time.»
He explained that while upgrading the console’s specs and making it suitable for massive third party games is important, Nintendo was always viewed as the hardware and feature innovator. The base Switch itself was a remarkable piece of hardware with unique features, but the Switch 2 feels like more of the same, despite having new features.
«I was personally a bit disappointed because they didn’t disappoint everyone,» he added. «Because everyone wanted that better Switch in Switch 2.»
