How to play co-op in Nioh 3

To play co-op in Nioh 3 you can become a Visitor, summon a Visitor, or go on Expeditions with your companions — there’s no shortage of ways to make your way through the story with help. For all co-op options you’ll need to enter the ‘Co-op menu’ by interacting with a Shrine.

Nioh 3 Visitors explained

A Visitor is another name for the other online players that you can visit, and you become a Visitor when you head to help someone out. However you can only summon a Visitor or invite a Visitor during an active mission.

Remember, crossplay isn’t supported so if you want to invite your friends they need to be on the same platform as you.

How to invite a Visitor

To invite a Visitor to start co-op during your adventure, visit a Shrine and interact with it, then select the ‘Co-op menu’ option. You’ll need to spend Ochoko Cups to summon people to help you.

Offer the Ochoko Cups requested and you’ll ask for help from other players that are online.

If they accept the call for help, then they will request to join your session. Confirm you want to let them in and they will now be classed as a ‘Visitor’. They can now help you complete the mission or task at hand, and they’ll be returned to their own Shrine once the task has been achieved.

How to become a Visitor

If you want to become a Visitor to help others out on their adventures then head to the ‘Co-op menu’ at a Shrine and select ‘become a visitor’. Here, you can then set your search conditions so you don’t end up somewhere you don’t want to be.

After setting your search conditions, you’ll be matched with a player that meets the requested criteria and you’ll join their session.

However, there are some limitations put on Visitors, so if you’re a Visitor you cannot open chests. Also, once you’ve completed the mission you’ve agreed to help on, the session will automatically end and you’ll be sent back to the Shrine you used to become a Visitor.

Summoning Visitors

You can also summon Visitors to help you through the glowing blue graves around the map by using Ochoko Cups when you need help quickly. However, these will be CPU versions of the player you summon, rather than them actually joining you and playing alongside you themselves.

Also, you can let yourself be a CPU summon by using the Righteous Jasper item wherever you want to be summonable from. So for example, if you want to be summonable somewhere near an area you found particularly tricky and think others may get stuck on, you’d use your Righteous Jasper there.

Using summonable spirits or letting yourself be a summonable spirit is a bit different from other co-op play options because it technically doesn’t involve any actual cooperative play. That being said, it’s worth noting if you need some quick help with a mission or fight and don’t fancy waiting around for someone to join you another way.

Nioh 3 Expedition co-op explained

In Nioh 3, Expeditions allow you to cooperate with another player to explore and complete missions. There are two modes for this, Story mode and Mission mode, both of which are slightly different ways to play co-op. Also, taking part in continuous Expeditions will give you a Kill Count bonus to any Amrita or Glory collected by your exploits.

In all Expeditions, a grave will appear when someone dies and other companions will be able to revive them. If this is pulled off successfully, the Assist Gauge will be restored and a downed companion can revive themselves if the Assist Gauge isn’t empty.

Failure is a possibility here too. Keep an eye on the Assist Gauge on your screen as this will decrease each time someone dies. Once the gauge is empty, the mission will be classed as a failure.

Story Mode co-op explained

Story mode lets you explore the current area you’re in with a companion. Expeditions in Story mode will progress in line with the host’s world, and guests to their world (co-op players) are companions that can help while exploring.

One thing to note is that, if you’re a guest in someone else’s session, then you cannot use fast travel and there will be restrictions on your own progress. However, you can instantly move to the host using the Online Menu.

Also, if you’re a companion then your health will be restored when the session host prays at any Shrine and every companion in the session will be moved to that Shrine. Keep in mind that doing this will also respawn enemies.

To start or join a Story Mode expedition, interact with a Shrine, enter the Co-op menu and select ‘Expedition’ and then ‘Story Mode’, you’ll then be given some options

  • Create Room — Set your conditions and confirm by selecting this again, others can join you and your Expedition will start from your current location
  • Search — Set your conditions and select this again to start searching for rooms to join. Once you find one you like, select it and you’ll be transported there.

Mission Mode co-op explained

Mission Mode lets you play missions and sub-missions with companions, but all companions must have unlocked the chosen mission to be able to play it. Companions also have different limitations in this mode.

Companions can only have their life restored once per Shrine by praying at it; they are not connected to the host like in Story mode. Also, when the host prays at a Shrine, the companions will not be transported to them. However, in good news, enemies will not respawn either.

To start or join a Story Mode expedition, interact with a Shrine, enter the Co-op menu and select ‘Expedition’ and then ‘Mission Mode’, you’ll then be given some options:

  • Create Room — Set your conditions and confirm by selecting this again. You’ll then move to the Eternal Rift while you wait for people to join you, though you can always start the Mission alone.
  • Search — Set your conditions and confirm by selecting this again. Then pick the room you want to join from the list of results.
